Mexico City 2026

Heading down south in a couple weeks. Already locked in Comal Oculto, Gaba, Entremar, Voraz, Fugaz, Licoreria Limantour, Baltra Bar, etc. Tacos, bakeries galore, of course.

Any reservation-worthy spots I’m missing that I absolutely must hit / should replace any of the above with?

I’m of the opinion that it’s either contramar or nothing. Was not fond of the entremar vibes at all

Really? I love enjoying lunch there.. sitting on the 2nd floor terrace, open-air al fresco, nice breeze, getting a seat on the edge with a nice direct view of the green Plaza Uruguay is the move

lol that’s exactly what I did and I did not enjoy!

FWIW, I found Mexico City this time around to be the most over-touristed place I’ve ever been to: entremar was the epitome of that: prices had seemingly tripled in the last three years and the crowd was 90 percent American families.

I understand there needs to be some self reflection about why I think a place loses its charm when it’s all people like myself, but, alas.

Prices are going up very quickly most places, unfortunately, for most of us around the world.

I can’t imagine what inflation must be like for someone who was already having trouble making ends meet in Mexico.

The American families (and Canadian families) are probably choosing Mexico City as their spring vacation destination because it’s still going to be cheaper than fancier parts of the Caribbean or France, a week in NYC, or a ski trip in the States.

The price of American ski trips, European ski trips and Japanese ski trip for Canadians have doubled in 5 years. I paid around $4200 CAD (for me, on a group trip with 23 other adults) for a week-long ski trip to Japan that included flights, 3 Star Hotel, 4 dinners, 7 breakfasts and 5 days of lift tickets in 2020. The same trip cost $8000 CAD per person this year. The trips that cost around $2500 CAD to Aspen and Jackson Hole were priced around $4000 -$4500 CAD per week, with flights, lift tickets and shared accommodation, and did not include meals.

I know the inflation affecting travel elsewhere is not the same as prices in Mexico City tripling in 3 years. One can see how some families are going to choose Mexico City for a spring trip over a family ski trip this year.

(Edit: that said, I empathise with respect to your disappointment. I would find the changes disappointing, too)

@mzonelli and @set0312 have solid reccs. Run with those.

Just left CDMX. Here’s a short rundown:

Comal Oculto dinner, Masala y Maiz and GABA lunch were all stars :star: :+1:.

Other ideas are:
:round_pushpin: Nogal Nogal Supper Club (team formerly from Vigneron)

:round_pushpin:Maizajo upstairs (whoa that whole shrimp :shrimp: taco)

:round_pushpin:Siembra Comedor (the taco joint down the street looks great too)
If you want to take a deep dive into masa, this is the place. We had a large group so this:

Their pixlte ice cream was incredible. Love, love this restaurant.

:round_pushpin:CANA - if you need a break from masa and need a salad :green_salad:, this is a terrific bistro with lots of beautiful people in the Juarez, loved the croquettes and arroz, terrific wine list and cocktails.

:round_pushpin:Molina El Pujol, @mzonelli is right, go here for lunch or breakfast

:round_pushpin:Fonda Margarita for breakfast

:round_pushpin:Campobaja was just okay, maybe we ordered wrong.

I’m both inspired and let down about the number of quality French bakeries that have taken over the city. I found :round_pushpin: Ideal in Central both delicious and much more of the place. Go there before buying your Guyabana Kougin-Amann at Gala, Saint or Odette.

Regarding the Contramar vs. Entremar debate, both were excellent. :round_pushpin: Entremar for lunch over looking Parque Uruguay was super chill and relaxing. Lots of business lunches and well heeled fashionistas. I loved it with a stop at Bobito Design and a walk through Chapultepec. A side trip to the Museo Anthropological and maybe you’ll catch the Danza de los Voladores if the timing is right. Or Museo de Moderno to see the incredible Remedio Varo exhibit. :round_pushpin:Contramar was a totally different vibe. Booming and full of energy. Super fun and vibrant. Think end of week party :tada: vibes every night. Same menu, two totally different vibes. Brill.

Bars we liked:
:round_pushpin: Ahuehuete - not really a bar, more of a guided mezcal tasting, we did more than one and this was special and tops
:round_pushpin: Tlecan - small, incredible cocktails and service, great selection of agave spirits for tasting, go early if you want a more chill scene, later for the boom
:round_pushpin: Handshake - our cocktails were unique and delicious, service was very good, lived up to the hype, all tourists the night we went
:round_pushpin:Despachio Margarita - chill and amazing
:round_pushpin:Tokyo Music Bar - chill vinyl bar with excellent cocktails
Side note: we definitely felt better after consuming organic, 100% agave spirits, no hangovers

We learned lots about Mexican food ways via a sunrise Xochimilco farm visit at Arca Tierra with lots of café de olla and a farm cooked breakfast. Also a visit to an Organic Nopales Farmer, prepping and making our own nopales tacos. Two different styles of tortilla making and nixtimalization.

Will post about taco crawls, chocolate tastings, natural winemakers of Mexico, but all was beautifully curated by our fixer, Anaïs Martinez of Devoured! She has impeccable taste, connections, and access. Anaïs and all her people were lovely and amazing. Hospitality at its best.

Will edit, add, and post pics later, but you’re leaving soon so I just wanted to get this out there.

Don’t expect the deep value once had in CDMX. Spring Break was crowded, but heavily touristed with Mexicans and Europeans as well. Anaïs had a way of designing our trip in a way we didn’t get caught up in the crowds. 2026 will bring World Cup (June/July) and F1 (Oct/Nov), so plan accordingly. Also, the airport is under a fair amount of construction.

We had a four top on the edge of the balcony and were surrounded by Spanish speakers. Maybe we got lucky.

We did go on a weekend so certainly missed the work crew! Ha, maybe my revised take is this: Entremar is good if you are in the Polanco area! Sit upstairs, enjoy the breeze. It is not my favorite spot in the city but the food is still good!
