Michelin California

Well, Mori-san runs two restaurants in one space. His omakase is easily 1*. Yet even in Kali 1.0 Kevin did a tasting menu that was nothing like their a la carte offering. Pretty sure he did not get a star for their a la carte menu offerings, or maybe he did…idk.

Well, just ask Bernard Loiseau, oh snap…

Yes, we all know that story. Sad.

Maybe they lost a star because of move to a new location? i heard somewhere that when restaurants move, they usually don’t get their star on their first year.

Something else that’s puzzling: Bistro Na’s was completely removed from the guide.

The only new addition to the guide that I can find, which was not part of the March or May new-addition articles, is Broken Spanish Comedor

I suspect if Michelin revealed when they last went to all the restaurants they considered, how many people went, etc. it would be embarrassing for them—particularly on the lower end.

In that case, Shunji shouldn’t still be waiting.

i heard rumors that someone from Michelin does not like Shunji and has been preventing him from getting a star. i have no idea if that is true or even plausible.

Who that is in a position to know would gossip about it?

Who knows what differences the California guide staff see between the nine sushi places that have one star and the 37 others that don’t (like Shunji and Yoshizumi).

As a slight counterpoint, it’s well known that Sushi Sho’s Nakazawa-San despises the Michelin guide and they still gave him 3*

Jacaranda and Maison Kanatha not even listed is ridiculous. Lynx opened after them. I assume it is because Michelin didn’t try them, as it would be far more appalling if Michelin went and decided to exclude them in favor of, say, Little Fish Echo Park.

I don’t trust the process any more. I bet their visits to LA restaurants are way fewer than they should be.

Not even close. Lynx opened March 11, Jacaranda May 6.

Maison Kanatha long before Lynx, but maybe the inspector didn’t find it consistent or something.

No dough no show? :dollar_banknote:

Is it because Kanatha is considered a popup?

Electric Bleu:

W: I liked this restaurant. Every dish was good. Quality cooking with no pretension. Better than “good neighborhood restaurant”; I’d be happy to go back.

P: I enjoyed the meal tonight!

I was curious if it was going to get the ‘good neighborhood restaurant’ tag lol! It’s funny for me it feels like a spot that could be in Paris more than Pasjoli (which I do like). Hard to put a finger on why, maybe it’s the weird cramped room and food that feels better than it has to be. I’d actually be shocked if EB ever got a star but I don’t think it needs that anyway to be successful.

Kanathat is not pop up. They are opening on Friday thru Monday

I know it’s permanent now but I think it was billed as a popup in the space that’s normally another restaurant. My guess is the guide is weird about that. I’m not saying it’s right.

I honestly think this particular Michelin Guide inspector has a personal grudge against Shunji. Otherwise I don’t get why he doesn’t get it when his food and operation is much better at the ocean park location…
