So angry. I’m over him.

I think this ig review contextually is a little different the Los cholos guys asked him to come and provide criticism. It’s pretty harsh but they invited him to do it. It looks like he just posted a thank you dm from them

Maybe I’m crazy or on my heel turn on here, but I kinda like his recent stories. Dude is as arrogant and self aggrandizing as always, but he’s making an argument with evidence and contextualizing certain dishes within a larger tradition.

Maciel’s

Flores sandwich. “Costillas en adobo” but with jackfruit I believe.

Pretty tasty. Sorry for the awkward picture but it felt like it was going to fall apart. Probably better if they didn’t slice it imo.

Also stopped by Tropical Juice on Fig. Always a must stop for me.

Their breakfast sandwiches really work! Helps that the vegan bacon is excellent. The pastrami generally a little less successful imo.

For the win opening on the stretch by barra santos. Tasty burgers but not really too interested in a smash burger chain.

Belle’s had a glow up and is now decorated like an old school NYC deli. Should be nostalgic with all the creative NYC transplants in NELA. Still have not tried them yet.

They have pictures of Langer’s etc.

I like but don’t love the bagels.

Vibes are good, food is decent but not worth a special trip imo. Except maybe the new schnitzel, in chicken or mushroom. Nice matzoh ball soup too. Heard good things about the cocktails but haven’t tried yet.

Reuben was excellent! Incredible pastrami. Reminded me of Ugly Drum (though not smoked in the same way).

Taqueria Frontera:

Will try again before making a firmer judgment, but this was hit and miss for me. Asada was dry and lacking smoke, though I liked the tortilla. Birria vampiro probably my favorite. Felt the crema overpowered the al pastor.

This place made me wonder if and what is a destination taco in LA. For this style I’d still prefer Tacos Don Cuco and maybe even 1986, not to mention local (to me) options like La Guera or El Chino. ‘Composed’ tacos (no salsa bar) are a tough alchemy.

Vital reporting. I still feel like La Guera keeps rising in the rankings for me personally, but that may be because I’ve reached being called “primo” status with the folks there. vámonos a la verga!

Frontera is stupid close to my place so I’ve been going often. Agree that the asada isn’t great—though I still order it in their mulita bc I like the guacamole and cheese delivery. The pastor is my jam these days. Mostly on the vampiro. Crema ratios can be off admittedly. Still a very solid addition to the HLP/Cypress Park Mexican scene. Took my nyc buddies to BLP on Monday then Frontera Tuesday and they were deeply envious.

Need to try La Guera again. Really enjoyed it the only time I went and I always forget how close it is to Glassell Park.

What are La Guera’s days and hours?

the Silverlake one (Hyperion & Rowena) is 7 days a week. They fire up the grill and the trompo around 3pm, asada’s ready starting around 5pm, trompo’s at its best around 6-7pm, and they usually close by midnight-ish unless it’s the weekends

York and N Figueroa has similar hours from what I’ve seen too

is the York and Fig one as good as the Hyperion + Rowena?

Have not had the Hyperion + Rowena location. But I’ve had La Guera in Ktown on Pico & Hobart.

Pico + Hobart is my favorite location for tacos, but Fig + York is more than good enough since it’s a 5 minute drive for me. I almost always get an All Meat Burrito at Fig + York since it’ll often be my only meal of the day
