That’s the one. If you like canele it’s definitely worth checking out.
I was in Philly this weekend so I had to sample the local delicacy before heading home. After surveying some Eagles fans, the consensus pick was Angelo’s.
Really tender and flavorful meat, gooey Cooper Sharp cheese, well caramelized onions. Good quantity and ratio of ingredients. Fresh seeded roll adds a subtle bread flavor but mainly lets the fillings shine. No notes, really. It’s delicious.
All of that said, I think the cheesesteak at Matū is as good if not a smidge better, though it does cost more.
Fiorelli Pizza - Beverly Grove
Spot opened last week after being a popup in Venice. Most of my dining out these days is casual pickup and quick sit down, been waiting for a place like this.
Pizzas, saw a bolognese, fiorelli dog looks dope, panino con pulpo
Some LBC shenanigans……..
San and Wolves. My previous visit I sampled almost ooe with a friend. This time just myself. A little time in the microwave at home should make this perfect. I should ask if they can reheat at the shop. Reinnes coffee coming next door. Which seems to be a Viet and Filipino concept for their drinks. No line when I can early and plenty of parking around the shop. Cool people.
Let’s Yolk About It. Vegan burrito. Salsas kinda bland but I did enjoy the burrito. Has potatoes, avocado, cheese. The soyrizo with beans is a good move. Chorizo con frijoles is a quick simple dish that many make at home. Props to them if this was an intentional move for this homestyle dish. Also there is free parking between 700-1000am on 2nd?!?! Olives Deli. Reminds me little of the fancy deli’s around certain parts of Manhattan/BK. Really good veggie sandwich at a little around $10. Coffee from a cart and a Fiat!!!Cafablanca (second pic). Donation based! Really nice guy working this cool little setup. He setup at Bixby Park for my visit.
Bean Slayer makes coffee out of a Fiat and parked by the bball courts/skate rink at Junipero Beach.
Both a perfect stop before a walk, or a museum visit. It’s not gonna blow your mind but I am happy they are there for the community. Especially Cafablanca being donation based.
(this was all over a few weeks and not one day for the record!)
Nasi tumpeng mini at LaaLaaPan in Woodland Hills - casual Indonesian spot run by a husband and wife team. Nasi tumpeng mini consists of rice cooked in coconut milk and turmeric, rendang, chicken sate, fried noodles, orek tempeh (crispy sweet and spicy fried tempeh), pickled cucumbers, and they allowed me to substitute the egg omelete for egg balado (boiled egg in sweet chili). The slowly braised beef rendang had great flavor and the orek tempeh was the best I’ve had. I really liked it, a meal like this with a beer always hits the spot. The owners were very hospitable and sweet; they gave a me a ton of recommendations of their personal favorite spots in SGV. I asked them how they know SGV so well since their place is in Woodland Hills and they said they drive their often since they buy all their ingredients there - not bad for a SFV spot. I was the only one there on a Sunday night.. if you’re in the area get delivery or go in to support them!
Ginger pu-er tea and some chewy tofu w/ fried basil, thai chili, garlic at Steep in Chinatown - nice variety of tea here and I enjoyed the tofu dish for a quick bite. Seems to be a nice spot for remote workers.
Lonche de barbacoa at Carnes Asadas Pancho Lopez in Lincoln Heights - A delightful sandwich. The barbacoa is Jalisco style and is beef barbacoa (goat is also common, but not lamb). They told me they use 12 different ingredients to marinate their barbacoa and there surely was nice complexity in the flavor. Comes with red onion, tomato, avocado. Always nice to enjoy some free chips with good salsas while waiting. When the salsa comes in a corona bottle you know it’s gonna be good! Would like to go back for their spicy torta ahogada and carne en su jugo.
Did they sell lalapan?
^I believe so, it’s in the veggies section. Didn’t get any veggies but kangkung belacan is usually my go to! not entirely sure if that’s a Malaysian or Indonesian dish, but both cuisines usually have it on their menu
nice find. i will check them out next week for lunch based on your rec. been a while since i had a nasi rames / nasi goreng.
Morning glory is always a good choice!
Is there a maxi?
Morning glory is the supreme side green choice.
you name it Chinese, Taiwanese, Thai, Vietnamese, Malaysian, Indonesian, etc. lots of garlic, fermented soy beans or tofu, and some chiles
I prefer big pea shoots but morning glory is up there
Also love some dau miu with lots of garlic.
Both are going to be $20 a plate lol such a scam because every table is going to order it for “balance” lol
I must agree with the love for ong choy. What JeetKuneBao said.
Lunch at Otafuku. Hot zaru soba + shaved radish and vegetables. Delicious, though by the end the okra’s insidious slime had really taken center of the texture stage. $22 before tax & tip.
all very good choices of course but any love for brothy and glossy mustard greens simmered with ham?
TehranRo. So good. Rivals Adana for best Persian in LA for me. Our Iranian acquaintance also rates it highly. As for the name - TehranRo is a street in Seoul, and this is a restaurant in Koreatown.
no rice because I am cutting
Are talking about suan chai or fresh mustard greens? The later are generally a little bitter for me.
fresh mustard greens. yes, they can be a little bitter (but I also like bitter melon).
