Turns out my guest is allergic to lobster, shrimp, and crab.
And they can’t eat raw fish (they like cooked sushi).

Is this the best airport food available in America? You’d have to convince me otherwise. They ran out of the premade rolls so these puppies were rolled fresh and the sauce was warm right out of the pot. Worth waiting a few extra mins.
Does it matter that it’s $9 for 2 rolls at the airport vs $10 for 4 rolls in Fountain Valley? Not when you’re traveling for work.
They sell these at John Wayne?!?!
Yes just opened this year. Brodard Express. Spring rolls, bahn mi, bowls, Vietnamese coffee and pastries.
I probably only been to around 10 different US airports and I can confidently say that is probably the best airport food in the country!
Never been to John Wayne though lol that takeoff I hear is pretty steep
Mrs. Sk8uno and I tried Ramen Ochi over the weekend thanks to the love it has gotten on FTC lately. We both went with the Nikutama ramen and agree with the general sentiment here – it is quite good. Its location in the mall is unfortunate, though. I hope they can succeed despite that.
It’s funny i never thought it was hidden because it’s on my ‘secret’ route from Eataly to the apple store (via little used elevator from the floor above). Also the best espresso in the mall is right there at La Colombe
I had a laughably bad experience here Friday night, though that was due largely to the fact that there was only one front-of-house worker. He was also plating dishes in back! It took 25 minutes to get water and, in total, our meal took well over an hour. A chicken karaage bowl had like two tiny pieces of chicken because they had “run out.”
Food was good though!
Avi Cue in Studio City. Partner and I recently spent a decent-sized wait and then a disappointing meal at Daichan wishing we were next door instead, so I made up for it this weekend. Lots of flavor, with tahini, parsley and maybe turmeric standing out. Fast service, small portions - I was in and out in about 15 minutes.
I was still hungry so after a stop at K&L on the way home, I checked out Sua and then picked up some donuts at Holey Grail on Larchmont. Sua’s rotisserie chicken wrap (not pictured) was solid - basically an above-average lunch you’d have on a day in the office. Added their chocolate meiji tofu pudding, which is quite rich and will likely take us a week to finish. Almost has the thickness of cake frosting but is chocolate-focused rather than sugar-focused so you don’t feel like some buttercream-addled freak eating it.
Holey Grail’s are my favorite donuts, especially fresh. Pandan lemon coconut, coffee kabocha with pepitas, truffle honey with charcoal, and Dandelion chocolate. Chocolate is usually the fave but I loved the coffee one even more this time. Crunch from the pepitas puts it over the top.
Hate to say it as someone who grew up on So Cal donuts but Holey Grail’s donuts are one of my favorites as well. Easily top tier for me. They are also vegan except for the donuts with honey. They have a POG flavor and I wanna try the pandan as well (20% goes to charity)
The Source Mall is also an option since that’s nearby.
They have Pelicana chicken and a lot of Korean food.
What do you recommend there?
Dude
Drive down the street to Han Yang
Oh, no! Hopefully, it was just a really, REALLY off day for them.
Why does one need a secret route from Eataly to the Apple Store???
Besides the Moushi Beach BBQ, I had some other food this weekend:
Sawtelle Tempura House
Again started eating b/f remembering to take the pic. Katsudon is one of my favorite comfort foods…
Danny Boy
Finally tried it! I haven’t been following the screens discussion and don’t know how that affects the crust, but partner and I were quite pleased. While my heart will always be w/ the fancier pizzas, it’s really nice to have place that turns out a tasty, classic, straightforward slice.
I have to mention the lighting fixtures, which I think are FANTASTIC. I think the other two fixture had neon representations of melting cheese.
That reminds me to visit Tempura House before they close later this month. I think they posted on IG that 10/26 is their last day. They’re my go to place for comfort Japanese food. Going to miss them!
Mariscos Las Palmas de Colima on 120th. Two fish tacos, one shrimp taco. $14. Order at the counter, grab a table, enjoy the music.
Not many people grabbing dinner this early and they absolutely fried this all to order.
Couldn’t find anything to criticize— three wonderful tacos. Can’t wait to come back to try the ceviche.
Also heard a great new tune.
as part of subscribing to the angel by emily wilson (the substack i mentioned above) i evidently get to gift three month-long subscriptions. anybody want one? if so, just dm me ur email.
finally got to try @hppzz’s novalox after @chrishei hoarded the first batch.
tender, fatty and delicious. i didn’t have any bagels so just ate this straight up like a heathen.
To be fair to @chrishei, won it on side bet for fantasy football
If I had won, he would have brought me PRD chicken rice
