October 2025 Rundown

a Little Saigon OG but certainly not worth any sort of drive. Tasty enough for it’s class though.

Sad/Sorry - It’s hard to loose a place that has such a pull on your heart.

Yakitori Ya was like that for me.

It’s been there longer than me so credit should be paid to the elders!

bang bang w/ Canton restaurant across the street, same plaza as the aforementioned Peking Restaurant.

Thank you @avantbored for sharing a place that is near and dear to the heart. I love hearing stuff like this. So bittersweet.

If you want some comfort and nostalgia being in the same area @Ns1 mentioned Canton Restaurant. I have a review of them in the Little Saigon thread. Really good porridge and sizzling tumeric dill fish.

EPIC!

I’ve been frequenting the Whittier street side collection and that taco vendor at the end of the street is always popular since they are also making their own tortillas. But I have yet to drop by. The chowpups have been wanting Mochomitos.

I really like the Arepas truck.

I’m jealous - that stretch in Whittier is great! I need to head back to try that taco place at the south end, to hit Mochomitos when they actually have beef rib, and to give Tacos El Tio 2023 a fair shot when I’m not already absolutely stuffed.

I have not had great luck at this intersection but will keep trying. Neither of the Uzbek trucks (Era and Naryn) have blown me away, getting a pretty bland chicken arepa at the Colombian truck took 30 minutes, and the syrup on the knafeh is really strong. Mrs. Knafeh herself is really helpful and approachable, so I’d try again and ask for less or even no syrup. Hope to hit the Halal Kebab by Farhod next time. I saw him setting up the fire and was intrigued.

X-posting here.

Back from my weekend and didn’t want to bloat this thread.

Yeah, I think those options are probably the weakest in the area so I am not surprised. Frankly none of them had more than one or two customers the night I was there, and it was a Friday night.

I tend to stay away from trucks like Era and Naryn where all the cooking seems to be done in the truck. I just think more often than not in those situations, you are getting nothing special. There are plenty of exceptions to this across town, but this is my starting assumption for trucks.

With other vendors, where they are actually cooking over charcoal (or some other fuel) that I can see, outside of the truck, that’s where I think the real promise is. At least for me. So if you do go back, I’d say give one of the live grills a chance!

100%, it’s more of a timing thing for me (the trucks are there when I’m driving by on my way home but the grills have yet to be set up). I wound up catching Mrs. Knafeh just as she opened up at 4:30 on Sunday, luckily. I’ll make a trip back to check out the flames for sure.
