Ojai (2025)

Heading up tomorrow to play Soule Park and grab some dinner. Is the move Pinion, the Dutchess, or Rory’s Place? Or is there a fourth candidate that I need to know about? Kinda leaning Pinion right now because I had it for lunch last year on the way up to Bell’s and can’t stop thinking about it.

I like Rory’s a lot. Dutchess you can get similar by going to Huckleberry Santa Monica.

My vote would be The Dutchess. While their day/lunch menu has some similarity to Huckleberry, the chef Saw brings a lot of his Burmese background to other dishes, but more prominently on the dinner menu.

Ugh things got very late so we ended up at Pinion, though I appreciate the input on Dutchess and Rory’s.

Pinion isn’t destination-worthy, necessarily, but it’s the type of restaurant that I’d do anything to have be in my neighborhood. It functions how Lodge Bread might function on the west side? Great bakery in the day and pizza and a few other things at night… kinda reminds me of what Hail Mary was before David sold it.

How was the course? I’ve heard Soule Park is a steal for the price.

It is very slow but it is the best value course in so cal by some margin, lol. It’s so good. 30 bucks for a 220 tee time. Immaculate shape, good routing. lol don’t get me started.

Not sure how The Dutchess still call themselves a Burmese restaurant. It is Americanized food with some south/southeast Asian inspired ingredients. I mean the food is not bad, but all in all, there was really nothing Burmese about it.

That is a steal!

I was perusing Sandpiper nearby, and even that seems pretty fair for a seaside course.

Perhaps S/SE Asian is an overall better descriptor but..

Naan, puri, tea leaf salad, chickpea curry, biryani, banana leaf fish…. American?

The daytime menu’s like a different restaurant.

Weekend trip!

Started off at the Duchess for lunch. Had the coconut chickpea curry and the kale chicken salad. Chicken was kind of hainan chicken style though cold. Actually think the salad was a bit more interesting than the curry.

Splurged for dinner at Olivella. View ridiculous and food was probably worth it. Salad almost tasted a bit like an everything bagel. Both pastas were great. Upgraded to wagyu; thought it was overall better than the halibut (though the seasonal tomatoes etc were great).

Lunch at Ojai Roti. Thought the sides with our chicken were just ok but the chicken and toum and pita were good. Also got a salad, which was fine

Veggie focused dinner at Rory’s Place. Loved it!

Stopped at Spencer McKenzie’s for fish tacos in Ventura. Fine though wouldn’t go out of my way for em.
