One bowl of noodles

I think so. I eat at Cassia quite a bit and I never found their noodles portions, or really any of their portions (other than sunbathing prawns, perhaps) to be small.

It was many, many years ago, and we hardly had an extensive sampling. My vague recollection is that the sea bass and Pot Au Feu seemed quite small (although, to be fair, I don’t think any place gives a particularly large portion of sea bass…). Entirely possible my memory is wrong.

A couple more:

Any of the noodle soups or dry noodles at Phnom Penh Noodle Shack in Long Beach.

Soba at Ichimi-An (PCH) or Ichimi Ann Bamboo Garden (Cravens Ave.) in Torrance.

I also thought Saap’s jade noodles were great. I liked that dish better than the #2 boat noodles, Jonathan Gold’s regular order.

Big portion

Thanks, all. I ended up having two different bowls of noodles for lunch. First, I went out to Lao Xi Noodle House and tried the Wife’s Special Noodles. Unfortunately, they were a bit of a disappointment for me personally–the noodles came overboiled and lacking in chew, and the flavor was just too heavy on tomato-ey sweetness for me. The meat was also not of the highest quality. I then hit up Sapp on my way back home for the Jade Noodles with extra BBQ pork. This was a great bowl of noodles–lots of chew, a nice lingering spice, and all the meat was good. My only complaint was the crab itself was really low quality, after having one bite I moved it out of the bowl and enjoyed the rest.

Thanks for all of the other recs too–lots to try!

which one? the old one on live oak, or the new one on baldwin?

hmm. last time i was there, the wife was there (recognized me and greeted me). i suspect she spends time at both locations - plus she also visits the in-laws at noodle palace (old noodle boy location) which serves much of the same menu. maybe she’s spreading herself a little too thin.

could just be flukey - we go pretty often to the baldwin location and it’s always quite chewy.

If greater LA, then the bun bo hue at Ngu Binh in Little Saigon is the best in California or probably anywhere.

Also, really surprising there arent more ramen noodle recs

Anybody got recs for Taiwanese beef noodle soup on the westside (or westside-adjacent)? Used to get it like once a week when I worked in the SGV but I don’t think I’ve even seen it on a menu out here.

DTF (Century City), Popcorn Chicken, and Northern Cafe all have it on the menu.

Qin West has a beef noodle soup but I cannot tell you if it is ā€œTaiwanese.ā€

Maybe the characters help? Or do they just read out as
Niu Rou Mein?

Yes, indeed. Popcorn Chicken (Sawtelle Japantown) had the best Westside iteration but admittedly it’s been a while since I had it last…

Oh, I should’ve also meant to add that I haven’t had the beef noodle soup from any of these places in awhile, as well.

That’s what my parents call it whenever we order it. Not sure if there’s a specific spicing/herb profile that @bruins is seeking.

@bruins, what places do you like in the SGV for this dish? I’m not a huge beef noodle soup person, but this info might help others to let you know if the places mentioned will scratch your itch…

Minor point of correction: 牛肉麵 (traditional, not simplified, Chinese characters used if you are talking Taiwan-style) is pronounced (pinyin) niĆŗròu miĆ n. 牛腩 is beef brisket.
