Our favorite restaurants this year

This was my experience too. Liked but didn’t love. Caveat maybe we ordered ‘wrong,’ and I liked all the individual dishes, but the meal was unrelenting in its salt, sugar and fat and by the end everything felt a bit undifferentiated.

*Prob didn’t order enough raws/crudos.

Is this in arleta?

Yes by the DMV. Come early on the weekend mornings. IMO it’s the best tacos in LA.

You buy by the lb or by taco?

Pancita, barbacoa, or morcilla rankings?

Funny you mentioned Langers - as I believe you eat no/minimal meat right? But you reminded me that I ate at Langers this year and it definitely deserves a spot on my favorite restaurants of the year list, so i’m updating to add it.

I buy it by the taco. For me it’s:

  1. Pancita
  2. Barbacoa
  3. Morcilla

You can buy by weight or by taco. In both cases you can specify where you want the meat to come from (costilla, cabesa, etc).

I think it’s the best lamb barbacoa in Southern California. Stomach and blood sausage are very good.

Which part of the lamb would be best? Cabeza, stomach area, neck or ribs?

Do you think this place is worth the price (I’m assuming it’s expensive based on location) for someone who is not a sushi connoisseur?

I do! Maybe start with the lunch omakase which is like 40% of the cost of the dinner one, or just go and order some stuff a la carte to see if it aligns with your preferences. I think their dry aging program is great and the few twists they put on ultra traditional sushi are fitting.

I eat meat, just not with added nitrates/nitrites.

Wanted to add Komatsu to my list

The hamburg and katsu with starchy egg sauce are spectacular
