Pay By The Pound Chinese Food Comes To Monterey Park

The pioneering Monterey Park Chinese restaurant storefront from 45 years ago at 143 W. Garvey Ave., originally home to Mandarin Palace (though it served Hong Kong style seafood) but which has been a non-restaurant retail space for many years, is once again home to Chinese food, Jiu Hao Can Ting. Concept is something I’ve seen a few other places, but not the San Gabriel Valley–serve yourself, but pay by the pound. Kind of like a buffet, but not all you can eat. Food here is excellent, but the selection skews different from Chinese buffets in the area, which target a combination of Chinese and non-Chinese diners. $9.99 a pound, with an introductory discount. There won’t be many non-Chinese diners eating here. Yet another non-restaurant retail space that has recently converted to Chinese restaurant. Continues to make me wonder if there’s actually a shortage of Chinese restaurant locales, particularly with street parking or strip mall parking, in the San Gabriel Valley, despite the existence of maybe a thousand Chinese restaurants. In contrast to the large malls which are bleeding with few tenants.

Lol i was making a joke/comment “jui hao” reading it as “the best”. But apparently I can’t read because it’s actually “jiu hao” looks like “number 9” but I can’t see/read the second character

九號快餐 (jiû haó kuaí can) means No. 9 Fast Food…
