Honestly I’ve only ordered from there twice and both times rocked. Perhaps don’t have a large enough sample size to properly judge!
I agree. I had Gjelina recently (somehow had never had their pizza before) and it was PERFECTION. I was like, this has been here the entire time - pre LA pizza revolution?!
Follow up! We did make it back to PS during Move-in and it was just as good if not better. We got a ginormous caesar salad and two pizzas, both amazing, but
the special (I think it was called Fileto) with the little tomatoes was the winner.
A bit late, but finally reporting back. Absolutely L | O | V | E | D Sei. Oh man, so so so good.
Met a friend there for lunch, he wanted to split two pies, I said sure … and then ordered 2 more #FTCstyle
Banger after banger after banger after banger … had quite a bit leftover, and it reheated incredibly well. Partner LOVED it, even re-heated, equally as well.
LA is incredibly lucky to have this, and fwiw I absolutely thought this was better than what we had at Savoy, in Tokyo.
the absolute best pizza in la, not even close tbh
I had a great at Gjelina so long ago that I posted about it on Chowhound, and Jonathan Gold recommended their pizzas in his 2009 “99 essential restaurants” blurb on the place, so they’ve been making them for a while.
I got the probably the last Mala lamb pie ever, at least according to the server.
They were actually out of said pie tonight but they were nice enough to check with the kitchen and they had enough ingredients to make one more pie, so they did!
It was very unique memorable and tasty on that amazing crust. @chrishei what did you think of the Mala pie? However it doesn’t hold a candle to their special margherita which I would prob choose 9.5 out of 10 times if given the choice between the two.
As good as any pizza I had in Naples, too…actually, better than any pizza I had in Naples, TBH
gjelina lamb or mala lamb?
Gjelina lamb for flavor for the cornicione i prefer sei
I really liked it - lamb wasn’t gamey so the overall package was more akin to the recent sausage white pies a la Mozza, but love the spice and creme fraiche combination.
Yeah the creme along with the lemon really balanced it out
Blasphemy lol. It is prob better than much of the Naples guidebook hits.
I have no doubt that @CiaoBob isn’t using any guidebooks when he travels!
Actually, I have no idea.
i am a lifelong East Coaster and I would happily eat Sei pizza to the exclusion of all others for the rest of my life.
lamb and beef tongue pizzas are outstanding, loved the flavor combinations on both.
the surprise highlight from the antipasti plate was the canned bluefin belly, so fatty with an incredibly lush and soft texture. I’ll be keeping my eye out for this.
@moonboy403 @butteredwaffles @Bagel review forthcoming?
funghi crostini - black truffle, maitake, lardo aromatica, extra virgin olive oil, aged balsamic vinegar, chive, thyme, shallot, creme fraiche, toast
antipasti plate - prosciutto, soppressata, mortadella, mozzarella di bufala, moliterno al tartufo, canned bluefin belly, giardiniera, toasted garlic bread
braised wagyu beef - a5 wagyu beef tongue, green onion, fresh shaved mushroom, salted shrimp paste, fior di latte, pecorino romano, black pepper, sea salt
mala lamb sausage - kendal farms creme fraiche, pimento bell pepper, smoked povola, cilantro flowers, shaved shallot, tomato pulp, pecorino romano, parmigiano reggiano, black pepper, extra virgin olive oil, mala spiced chili flakes
margherita - tomato, fior di latte, basil, extra virgin olive oil, sea salt
tirimisu
This was excellent. What a bite.
They lied to me about the last mala lamb pie lol!
Would you say beef tongue or one of their other pizzas? I am going to probably go tomorrow.
tongue all the way
Haha I went alone after some drinks and bites at Ototo. So this was a dinner 2 and I couldn’t get all the variety Porky’s group got. Ended up with the Mala Lamb Sausage and squeezed in part of a Margherita Special before I tossed in the towel and took the rest home. Mala Lamb Sausage is nice with the spice but Margherita Special was a 10/10 for me.
Maybe it’s recency bias but this ranks at the top of pizzas I have eaten, either matching or maybe even exceeding my other favorite: the Tamaki pizza at Pizza Studio Tamaki Roppongi in Tokyo. The flavors are just so rich for a neapolitan and that first bite is so magical. Drooling just thinking about it.
Sadly the rest didn’t reheat as well for me. Probably user error but the saltiness became more pronounced after some time in the oven. Definitely eat it all there and don’t save it! Next time I go I’m definitely getting a margherita first! Would drive 50 miles again for this pizza!
