Sign of the times: vaccinations available at my local Costco, no appointment necessary.
In San Diego, there are quite a few vaccination locations where an appointment is optional now. Among them are Albertson’s pharmacies, CVS pharmacies, some Costco locations, and one YMCA. Plus several institutional locations.
Speaking of vaccination sites, kudos to LA for doing this:

So far Texas is still trending down.
Nobody knew it for sure how the situation would develop in different parts of the country. It could have also developed differently and if Newsom would have also opened up early than you would have blamed him that he opened up too fast. It’s always easy to finger-point afterwards. I prefer politicians who if in doubt try to protect their citizens

The averages hide the differences between the vaccinated and unvaccinated, who in many places are still at significant risk.

Really, about all that can be said about this has been said before. The unvaccinated, regardless of which of the four categories they fall into, should for their own health and that of other unvaccinated people, share a moral obligation to at least mask. Wearing a mask carries no inherent stigma or implication.
That the unvaccinated are spreading covid to other unvaccinated people gets a big “duh”.

I had to look that up.
It seems there are so many news articles about businesses, especially restaurants and entertainment venues like theaters, finding it hard to hire people to work for them.
But, no surprise: Something tantamount to the old expression, “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me” is no doubt at play, given the way employees were jerked around for over a year by Newsom’s nightmarish, knee-jerk power surges. On. Off. On. Off.
People who got screwed by these inept, asinine attempts at covid containment – people laid off, rehired, and laid off again – or simply let go, still had to pay the rent and buy food. And so having been “fooled” more than twice, they’re gone, having long since found some way to deal in their personal lives with Newsom’s heavy-handed light-switch approach.
Now the lights are going to suddenly go full-up come June 15. Boom. The circuit breakers will all be switched on at once. So is it a big surprise that there’ll be a shortage of labor to fill the commensurate, similarly instantaneous increase in demand?
Why work . When your getting a check for the same pay to sit on your ass. It’s all so stupid.
Research does not support this viewpoint. It’s a right wing trope that has little basis in fact. People generally want to work, and unemployment is not “the same pay” as the job you no longer have.

That was never the case for anyone who made more than $600 a week (equivalent to $15 an hour for full-time work, or $31,200 annual salary), and it wasn’t the case for anyone who made more than half that after the federal Covid supplement ended six months ago. And where in the US can you live on $300 a week?
It’s clear from comparing various jurisdictions that closing restaurants was very effective. Attempts at compensating restaurant owners were inept as fuck.
That has absolutely nothing to do with Newson but it is a US wide phenomena. It shows more general fundamental issues around minimum wage, people needing more than one job to feed their families etc.

Yes, it was nation-wide, but it was most acute in CA. We have the highest unemployment in the country.
In April 2020, 8.3%, the second-highest, after Hawaii, but we were only #40 in February 2020, so it’s not like we fell all that far. And part of the reason for that is that tourism accounts for a relatively high percentage of jobs.
Which states hard-hit by Covid do you think managed lockdowns better? New York was a lot more lax than California and they’re tied for third-highest with 8.2%.
Many restaurants in MA, NH, ME are allowed to open at fully capacity but haven’t done it yet because they can’t find any workers (FOH, BOH). Some of them are still relying on take-out only even if they mention that they desperately want to open. So, California is by far not the only place experiencing it very acutely at this point.
