I called them earlier to verify that they’re open today but the guy who picked up said they had to close down due to the pandemic.

they’re still open but only on weekends between i think 9-sellout (~12 or 1) at their original location (5607 mckinley ave, in the parking lot). it was only for a short while they had a brick-and-mortar with barbacoa every day. Atotonilco is also weekend only, 8-sellout, i think aqui es texcoco might be the only barbacoa-focused brick-and-mortar selling it daily (but other options would be gish bac or maestro in pasadena).

Aah, ok. Thanks for the info!

I have a personal bias against this place but lots of folks I know like the Barbacoa de Borrego at My Taco in Highland Park. Maybe not on the level of the real pit-dug good shit, but in the category of reliably solid brick-and-mortar it might scratch the itch.

Huarache Azteca does it on weekends, but haven’t had it myself.

Another lamb question…

Where should I go for lamb pies since Beijing Pie House is no more? I also miss BPH’s wonderful lamb noodle soup.

ZUI XIANG YUAN has good pies

Did both locations of BPH close?

Indeed the Alhambra is listed as closed.

The Monterey Park location the new owners still have xian bings on the menu. Has anyone tried them?

There are plenty of places to get lamb noodle soup. That can be found at pretty much any Shaanxi or Shanxi-style place.

I’d be interested in the current state of xian bing in the SGV. There used to be a few other places in addition to BPH that had meat pies, but most (all?) of them seem to have shuttered.

Unfortunately, no one seems to have anything like the wild veggie or radish pie that BPH had.

Jin Hai Pie House. I recall initial reports indicating a slight downturn in quality, but I’d welcome additional and newer reports. Yelp’s rating is 3 1/2 compared to 4 for BPH, FWIW.

I know. I just meant that I miss the BPH one in particular because it was my favorite.

it’s nice when a restaurant says service included and no additional gratuity is expected but really means it by not including an extra tip line on the bill.

Another approach I’ve seen is a 2% / 4% / 6% tip option on top of the service charge.

I have that move seriously p*sses me off.

If I worked in a restaurant and they took that line away I would be seriously pissed off. Taking away a customer’s ability to give more than required when they desire is not cool.

A server is not going to take it personally if you do not add more, you do not need to be mad at that extra tip line.

Helpful perspective to know.

Genuine question: is it really not possible to add an additional tip, even w/o a tip line?

Some customers get angry if there’s no tip line, so a 2% / 4% / 6% line or the like seems to me a reasonable compromise. Getting angry about that is obnoxious, since it puts the restaurant in a no-win situation. If you hate tipping that much, move to Europe.

You could probably write in a tip on a credit card slip without a tip line, though if the restaurant has a no-tipping policy, that might be causing trouble.

I think the only option would be cash, which many customers do in fact use when they want to tip above. But also many would not have cash, so it would limit them.

Can you keep your personal attacks and unhelpful snarky comments to yourself? The primary rule of FTC to not be a jerk should apply equally to you, too.

I had assumed the restaurant could run the card again, but perhaps they cannot unless there is an “actual” charge?
