Rasarumah - Rampart Village

I have no clue where in LA I was - is this silverlake? west lake? koreatown?

all I know is the restaurant is situated across from a 7-eleven and Laundry mat that have security cameras blaring that they have security cameras watching and recording you

Joined for the soft opening this past Sunday and it’s a wonderfully appointed space. Feels intimate with soft warm lights but tables are spread far enough apart. I think I counted seating for roughly 35 or so.

I gotta say the dishes looked good and tasted good - the team must have been in the lab for awhile to pump out these renditions so well at F&F. Probably a few small tweaks here and there but it’s pretty much good to launch. Really refined presentation of Malaysian food - something we don’t really have in LA.

We ordered

Gado Gado
Ulam Bendi
Chicken Satay
Ayam Berempah
Char Koay Kak
Hokkien Mee
Wagyu Beef Rendang
Sambal Ijo
Sambal Tumis
Extra extra extra Roti

First up -

Hokkien Mee, Chicken Satay, Gado Gado. Normally noodles don’t come so quick but I requested them for my daughter.

The Hokkien Mee was a delicious rich noodle. I enjoyed the texture contrast of the two noodles and the seafood umami from the oils and squid. When I think of Malaysian HKM I think of a dark soy sauce but this looked more like the Singaporean style? Regardless very good - great start to the meal

Gado Gado - one of my favorite Indonesian dishes - basically a peanut dressing salad. Refreshingly crisp with a light peanut dressing and wonderful shrimp chips. I had maybe half a shrimp chip cause my daughter took them all. The hint of mint was a nice bite on the backend.

Chicken Satay - Big A+s from my wife and daughter. My daughter is always very very clear that she doesn’t eat chicken. But she absolutely crushed a skewer.

Ulam Bendi - I loved this dish. Dish of the night for me. Perfect textured eggplant and okra with a sharp sour sambal with crisp baby shrimp on top. Must order.

Char Koay Kak - wok tossed rice cake with egg and bean sprouts. I liked the texture play of the rice cake cook - crisp hard edges with the soft interior.

Ayam Berempah - Family once again crushed this. My wife had this dish and the beef cheeks tied as #1. Chili sauce has a great kick to it, I used it with some noodles, really freaking good.

Wagyu Beef Rendang - The ROTI IS FIRE. SO DAMN GOOD. We ordered many extra. Dipping it in the rich earthy rendang sauce with some mint and pickled veggies? A+. One of my favorite preps of roti in LA. My daughter ended up wrapping her fried chicken in the roti ha. My wife took the leftover beef home and crushed them for lunch the next day. She marveled at house decadent but delicate the beef was.

Sambal sauces - okay when I was eating at the restaurant I couldn’t figure out what to eat them wish. Later I suggested to Johnny that he serve em with extra shrimp chips. Just felt the sauces got kind of lost with everything else on the table. I took it all home and ate it the next day. Completely different sauce - sour , bright, juicy flavors, mild spice. I could put it over anything - really great sambals.

Ice Cream sunday - vegan coconut ice cream, coconut jelly, pandan sauce. Sorry no pic. I crushed this near solo. Cup shape is a bit weird to dig into things cause it narrows so sharply and you end up with a lot of jelly and not a lot of ice cream but outside of the mechanics of it - a straight forward but delicious dessert.

Overall a very nice meal - I already see the table in the back ready for some wine dinners ;). Congrats Johnny!for putting together this wonderful homage

Rampart Village. Young’uns may not recall that Shige-san’s legendary Sushi Shibucho was right next to that 7-Eleven…
