Many middle easterners simply use tomato, tomato paste, salt, and LOTS of spices and peppers.
Any shakshuka with sugar is simply unnecessary in my opinion. Its really simple to make at home and all you need to do is make a big batch once, and freeze leftovers in separate bags to use on different future occasions
Had an incredible take-out meal from Taco Maria yesterday. They are doing burritos using tortillas from Burritos La Palma. I tried a few. The best was a refried butter bean and cheese burrito, which had brown butter in it. Together with their green salsa, this was fucking insane, and leap years better than the best bean and cheese burrito I had ever had previously. I also tried it with some of their salsa morita and that was great too.
I call RunningMan and ask if they will deliver from restaurant to my house. Then I call restaurant and order food. Then I call RunningMan and give them at ETA for pickup. They are pretty fast.
It might be different if you are getting food from a restaurant that is listed in their pamphlet “Just Do Eat” or on their facebook page and live in K-Town. Maybe then just you call restaurant?
old school courier model that specializes in food.
What are the rates for such a service?
From K-town, including Langer’s, to my house in west LA, west of 405, they charge $25. Flat rate, no additional charges.
They are opening a bigger second location in Sherman Oaks next to Boneyard Bistro
Nice!
Another great pickup option in the Valley is Burgerama in North Hollywood. Silly name but putting out absolutely fantastic burgers to go.
Not quite a “restaurant,” but I was pleasantly surprised to discover that you can get prepared food from Erewhon delivered via Postmates.
If you are staying in, but not feeling like cooking, this is a good and more economical option than ordering restaurant delivery because you have much more diverse choices than ordering from any one restaurant and it is easy to stock up for a few days worth of meals as opposed to ordering restaurant delivery every day. Plus, frankly I think the Erewhon prepared food is better (and with more healthy choices) than from your typical restaurant.
Today, I ordered sushi for dinner (I’ve always thought Erewhon’s sushi was decent as supermarket sushi goes), frittata for tomorrow’s breakfast, chicken breast sandwich for tomorrow’s lunch and chicken and vegetables for tomorrow’s dinner. Plus, I got a loaf of Tartine baguette, which I’m curious to find out if it is better than any other supermarket baguette.
The biggest revelation was the Erewhon pizza that I had for lunch today. I really wasn’t expecting much, but decided to throw it into the order because it was inexpensive. It came in a cardboard pizza box the same as if you got a pizza from any pizza delivery place. The cheese was excellent and the pizza was greasy in the best kind of way that New York slices are greasy. The crust had a nice flavor (and without my pet peeve of being too sweet). Only downside was that the crust was quite flaccid – not crisp at all. I’m not sure if I could have remedied that some by reheating the pizza in my oven on a pizza stone. Anyway, the pizza was neither earth-shattering, nor something I suggest you go out of your way for, but it was inexpensive, frankly better than a lot of more expensive pizzas I have gotten delivered from actual Italian restaurants during the pandemic, and a good option to throw into your delivery if you have a hankering for pizza with your other prepared foods.
It probably also helps that you can get it delivered in Pasadena.
Tall order. Does anyone know where to get Yankee or French-style pot roast, braised beef, short ribs, etc. in the Mid-City, Beverly-Grove, Bev Hills areas? It’s for tomorrow and Jar & Republique are closed Tuesday.
Thanks!
what about korean short ribs? genwa?
Haha… I almost wrote no galbi-jjim. It’s a birthday dinner and the bday boy who eats a lot of Korean specifically requested steak & potato, pot roast or beef bourguignon as a last resort. I might get Carlitos Gardel but steak isn’t really travel friendly so I was wondering if anyone had a suggestion. Yep, tall order.
P.S. Has anyone been to or had A Food Affair? I haven’t been in a long while but they do have beef bourguignon.
Tesse has short ribs and steak frites!
maybe an old school steak spot like Musso’s or Taylor’s? Although they may only offer that sort of thing once a week…I did make beef bourguignon myself on Saturday… came out great, but it’s an entire afternoon project…
I’ve had A Food Affair and had their beef bourguigon. Thought it was just okay though.
I’ve not been in years but perhaps Monsieur Marcel in the Farmer’s Market if bœuf bourguignon does the trick for you.
What about stewed oxtail from Wi Jammin on Pico?
Okay, here’s where we’re at… because I know you’ve all just been waiting with bated breath. ![]()
Tesse was making my mouth water (short rib paccheri & steak frites!), but appears to be closed for dinner Tuesday, like a lot of places for some reason. Covid hours?
Genwa - Duh, Cookie, @PorkyBelly probably meant BBQ, not stew. KBBQ is a favorite but I’m worried about keeping thin cuts hot without reheating.
Carlitos Gardel is open 7 days and has a thick cut Bone-in Ribeye for Two that could probably handle a zap under the broiler, but they only take walk-ins for their to-go orders (order & wait). ![]()
Wi Jammin is a neighborhood fave but not swanky enough for my bday boy.
Your post is right up my alley @LAgirl, like minds, but more for sit down and I’ll try my hand at beef bourguignon another time. ![]()
A Food Affair doesn’t sound promising.
It’s looking like Monsieur Marcel. It’s open, it’s close and I can grab some wine & dessert!
Thanks once again Food Talkers!!!
@TheCookie Chi Spacca has short ribs. But I believe they are grilled so not sure how well they would hold up. You cant go wrong supplementing the meal with salads, sides, pastas and dessert from the Mozzaplex.
Thanks @js76wisco! I probably should’ve been more clear about the short rib thing… that’s what I get for trying to be less-wordy. My thinking was more about thick, braised short ribs. But the Mozzaplex is indeed a great one-stop shopping dinner idea too. Hmmm…
