Sidecar. Impressive selection of beers on tap, with good variety. I chose Rodenbach because that’s what I was in the mood for. That gives you a sense of their selection. Good liquor selection. The pictured oysters were okay but not perfectly shucked. The unpictured mussels were below par - small, gritty, and lacking flavor. Still, I can’t complain, I’m in Roanoke, VA — a better-than-you’d-expect food town. Go more for the drinks and setting, and be content with the fine food.
Rodenbach has in general a pretty good distribution in the US through SFB Imports and it really depends on the specific beer. Which one did you have ?
Rodenbach Grand Cru. I like all the Rodenbachs.
River and Rail. After some research, it seems this might be Roanoke’s best known restaurant, as it appears in some outdated “Best of the South” type lists. It’s a straightforward “Michelin plate” kind of restaurant with enjoyable food, a nice setting, and a fairly extensive wine list. No complaints about anything. Wouldn’t go back if it was in LA unless I lived nearby, in which case I’d go often.
Lucky.
I liked Lucky the most of the three Roanoke restaurants so far. The menu was eclectic but the dishes were polished. I was impressed with the tenderness of the octopus and the overall salting correctness. Impressive cocktail and oysters too. I feel my luck could change.
Roanoke has lots of restaurants, and I’m more of an explorer type than a settler type, but still I chose to return to Lucky for my final Roanoke meal. I’m glad I did. It’s a seriously good restaurant with sophisticated cooking. I would absolutely return a few times a year if it were in LA. I didn’t take pictures of the Rappahannock oysters, but they were well shucked.
