Salmon -- is this skin or something else?

So I’ve renewed meal-prep delivery and got this:

What is weird, grey thing? Partner originally thought it was skin, but the skin is on the other side (and I don’t know how salmon fillets are cut and if there would be skin on “both” side?).

I’ve gotten salmon fillets many, many times from this meal-delivery service and have never seen anything like that. And I’ve seen salmon fillets throughout my life and have never seen anything like that.

Is it rotting flesh/mold?

Thanks, that was very informative.

I assumed from that link that the fillet is safe to eat but also did an internet search. As always, /reddit (also) delivers (and multiple posters claiming to work behind the counter or to be fish farmers safe it should be perfectly safe to eat). Also some of their thoughts on what the causes might be: https://www.reddit.com/r/KitchenConfidential/comments/1686fon/can_anyone_tell_me_what_these_black_streaks_are/

I’ll probably still cut that tiny portion out b/c I’m superficial that way, but I’m glad that the rest will not go to waste.

Interesting that farmed salmon show this more often than do wild.
