Salt & Straw - Best Ice Cream in LA

Both are two of my three go-to places at that food court. The beef tongue at whatever that place is called is just so good. Made special because of that little fire grill. It’s always between that and Santouku ramen. And the matcha soft serve is never enough. You just want to go back the next day and get another one. I think it’s the cake cone. People “think” they want the upgraded waffle cone for ice cream, but the more satisfying experience is always on a simple cake cone.

Signage up on San Vicente in Brentwood. Apologies for the terrible quality, I took the picture with a toaster.

Nice sleuthing!

Next to sugarFish. Dangerous(ly tempting LOL)…

I am digging the Terramana Egg Nog flavor.

Paired it with the gingerbread flavor…maybe the gingerbread’s icing made it a little too sweet.

not at all. they offer toppings, the most important part of the ice cream

I guess we are prioritizing quality criteria quite differently - toppings tend to be used by ice cream companies who have crappy ice cream (and Cold Stone is pretty much the bottom of the (quality) barrel for their ice cream). Toppings tend to distract from really good ice cream (or preferably gelato).

Most of the flavors at places like Salt and Straw are simply too bland to stand up on their own. Yes some are “good” to pretty good but all would benefit from at least THE OPTION Of some M&M’s, sprinkles, hot fudge, Reeces pieces etc…

Also places like Salt & Straw are nowhere close in quality to a place like Antico Nuovo which truly makes extraordinary ice cream that needs no added additions.

I agree that Gelato OTOH needs no further toppings.

I am not saying that S&S is the top quality choice wrt ice cream - there are significantly better options but they are still several levels above CS

Cold Stone’s gimmick is not toppings but mix-ins. Maybe it appeals to people who care more about candy than ice cream? Regardless it’s one of the more successful national chains.

both qualities are extremely important when the quality of ice cream is not to a level like Antico.

I would put S&S and CS in the same category of “ok” quality ice cream… it’s like arguing between the difference of McDonald’s and Wendy’s.

Salt & Straw would benefit greatly from having an option for toppings, that’s all I’m saying. Most of their flavors just simply can’t stand on their own.

Well, I disagree. Even the simplest flavors like vanilla, olive oil, and lavender are good on their own. And they have plenty of chunky / crunchy ice creams too.
