San Gabriel Restaurant, Golden Leaf, and their Stinky Tofu

Stinky tofu is no longer on the menu at Golden Leaf restaurant in San Gabriel after the city received complaints about the dish’s aroma. But the family behind the restaurant is fighting to bring back the popular Taiwanese street food, prized for its distinct, potent stench.

“The scene of stinky tofu in Taiwanese night markets is an invitation to community and tradition,” said David Liao. He owns Golden Leaf, located in a strip mall at the corner of North Mission Drive and West Las Tunas Drive in San Gabriel.

So one of the complainants is a customer who has never mentioned it them directly??? Weird.

Rather than creating a petition, maybe the restaurant owner should create a Go Fund Me for the fryer and filtration? I assume regaining that 10–20% in revenue will pay for the cost pretty quickly…

I got the sense that they don’t really know who’s complaining.

Oh, I got the sense from the article that there were multiple complaints but that the business knew one of the complainants.

When I saw the pic of the business, all I could think of was the El Pollo Loco I frequented as a kid (I think that’s the same location)…
