Me too, although I’m sad about the demise of Broadway Baker.
Speaking of laminated pastries and Santa Monica, Jyan Isaac is experimenting with them. Got a pain au chocolat at the Venice farmers market last week. It was fantastic and I think $7.

Saw a for lease sign on the Dagwoods building. Not exactly a FTC place but definitely a SaMo institution.
What was it like? We’ve passed it countless times, but we’ve never been.
Yeah, they announced in November that they were going to close by year’s end. Their glitter pizza was fun for the kids and they had a great happy hour.
Looks like someone new is having a go in the former tacoteca/grammercy bistro/Dono space. Have been seeing them painting the outside but didn’t realize it actually opened (at least, it has per Eater Santa Monica’s London-Inspired Restaurant Chelsea Serves a Global Menu - Eater LA).
Menu is a little all over the place but intriguing. Average Santa Monica prices. Sodapdf Merged | PDF | Sauce | Pickling
that reads like a 90’s style ‘fusion’ menu! I’m going to pass for now but maybe it’ll be better than I’m thinking it will be.
From the Eater LA article:
The new restaurant’s menu draws inspiration from the London neighborhood where Moez lived for a time as a child, incorporating flavors from India, East Africa, and beyond.
Perhaps Moez was a child of the 90s.
The prices aren’t too bad; that the menu is brief also gives me some cause of optimism. I might be willing to give this a whirl.
I seriously think that bldg must have some really bad feng shui, though.
If you like it I’ll check it out!
One thing at a time! I still need to try Rustic Canyon first.
Maru takes over for Lotus dim sum. Based on the IG, I assume it’s the same chef behind another Maru that had opened a few yra ago in West LA: Maru Finally Comes Back to Life in Santa Monica - Eater LA
I wish him luck in that bad feng shui area….
Have a hankering for a sandwich and learned that Bread Head is now open…
First mentioned here:
Giant line when we went by on Sunday. Will try it during the week when hopefully it calms down.
Margo’s has also re-opened.
I ate at Bread Head last week (on Montana Avenue). Got the roast beef sandwich. Had to wait one hour from ordering to receiving the sandwich. One. Hour. It was delicious, though, and I want another one.
Ugh. Glad to hear it was good, but 1 hr is too long to wait. I think I’ll wait a few wks or try to hit it in an off hour.
They sell out. Best to order online and pick up.
I should mention that we didn’t anticipate a one hour wait to collect our sandwiches. The line to order was short, that process took all of 5 minutes. Waiting for our names to be called to get our order was another ordeal, but everyone was patient since it was day 2 of opening. The online orders slowed things down, I think.
It would be great if new restaurants would get their timing together for a month or so, before opening up to online and delivery orders.
Mercado Santa Monica closed on Saturday. This one hurts, as I really liked the place. The food was consistently delicious and the bar made a mean margarita. They had my favorite carne asada in LA - so tender and flavorful. My girlfriend and I were there a few weeks ago on a Friday night, and I commented at the time that, while by no means empty, it certainly wasn’t as busy it should be on a Friday night. It seems like there’s a bit of a gap for upscale Mexican on the Westside with both Maradentro and Mercado now gone. I’ve been to Socalo…not a huge fan.
Damn, big loss
That does make me sad. Hope the family is okay. When they closed Yxta, I thought they could then focus on Mercado.
Is Hollywood as good as SM?
wow, Mercado on 3rd st also says permanently closed on Google Maps, What a bummer!
