Thanks for the heads up! Sounds right up my alley
What has been everyoneâs heat related dining decisions? I ended up back at California Chicken Cafe for the first time since the pandemic lol
a bottle of sauvignon blanc in front of the ac⌠dinner
We did a Blue Apron tonight b/c we were worried about the fish going bad, but otherwise trying to do stuff that doesnât require the range or oven to be turned on.
But, on other days, Mendocino Farms (I enjoy their Modern Caesar) and, seriously, microwaved âancient grainâ rice (Ralphs Simple Truth brand; Seeds of Change tastes WAY better) + some chili oil and harissa sauce on top.
The veggie sandwich (tried it for the first time this past wk) at The Carving Board is pretty good. Sauteed mushroom + pesto made it very satisfying.
Peach and tomato salad (w/ burrata) at Milo and Olive so good. The tomatoes were SO sweet.
Sushi at Kappo Osen (or whatever itâs called) in Santa Monica.
And Maeda-en green-tea mochi.
California Chicken Cafe hack for yâall: the Chinese side salad + add-on of dark meat chicken makes for a REALLY satisfying salad. And whatever dressing they put on their chicken pasta salad is like crack.
Cold soba noodles with tofu, cucumbers, grape tomatoes, and sesame-peanut dressing.
Cold pasta salad with lots of different veggies, lemon juice-olive oil or some Paul Newmanâs salad dressing lol
Oh, never thought about the cucumbers and tomatoes! Thatâs a great idea.
I am a simple man. Saffron & Rose (Westwood) for three luscious scoops: Pomegranate, Fig, and Cucumber. Glorious.

Dang, that does sound pretty refreshing!
Cold noodles is the way!
Got a box of korean soymilk soup base for cold noodles. Started making my own mul naengmyeon â dried noodles (buckwheat, thinner than soba), then did broth + pickle water from some korean soy pickles I made earlier + soymilk soup base + frozen mentaiko + asian pear.
Eric Kim also has a great cold noodles with tomatoes recipe: Cold Noodles With Tomatoes Recipe (with Video)
Besides that, a lot of tomato sandwiches.
been in the hinterlands of san clemente to see family / escape the heat the past two weekends. I really, really, really like Truly Pizza in Dana Point. Iâve only done takeout, but my goodness itâs tasty. The sweet and spicy which is a square situation is one of the best pies Iâve had in recent memory.
Yes I am a truly convert also!
In true OC fashion, it looks like they donate some portion of a pizza to a charity that helps police departments get k9s. Lol, Orange County will never change.
Damn good pizza though haha.
Dana Point holy moly thatâs far.
South OC will always have a boring food scene. Central OC with Little Saigon, Little Arabia, âKoreatownâ, Santa Ana/Anaheim for Mexican, Costa Mesa for Japanese is one of the most underrated areas in the country for food. Far more interesting than most mid size cities imo.
Agreed. I keep waiting for somebody to do a comprehensive rundown of the Costa Mesa Japanese sceneâŚ
Work has been utterly horrific thist past, so just a quick post.
Friday was really a hellish day, and I wanted to treat myself to a nice lunch. Clementine is close by. I donât love their food, but thereâs something to be said about a place that is very consistent, predictable, and respectably tasty. And I see the same people working there longitudinally, so hopefully they treat their staff well.
Work hellish-iness had largely resolved by Friday night, and we had pre-existing plans to meet up w/ friends at Holbox on Saturday (my 2nd trip there). I was happy that I had survived, so I decided to celebrate (whatâs pictured is just the portion for me and partner):
The scallops were apparently so good that partner forgot to save one for me!!! Wouldnât have made more char on my pulpo, but it was excellent otherwise. Fish taco was fine but skippable. Partner didnât like the flavor profile of the sauce on his pulpo taco (sweet, sour, smokey). I actually rather enjoyed it.
I used every carb I could find to sop up the oil/sauce/whatever from the shrimp. Partner was like, âOh, I forgot to save you a shrimp.â Me: âDoesnât matter, this sauce is such concentrated shrimpy goodness.â
They ainât skimping on the blue fin tuna portion in the ceviche.
My first visit yrs ago was transcedent. This was âmerelyâ excellent. All of the sauces are fantastic.
The friends had arrived a bit b/f 6PM and said the line wasnât moving. Line was moving pretty nicely when we joined them around 6:05PM.
Totally worth whatever wait (which wasnât that long). And, given the quality, excellent QPR.
saved you a click because that kind of statement made my (blocked?) heart go pitter pat
Miya Miya where the 101 and 405 meet, itâs on Ventura slightly east of Saugus. No website as of writing and it looks like they keep their info on Instagram, so check before you go.
If youâre headed on a Friday to their Ventura hours IG suggests parking at the car wash until the lot gets full.
FRIDAYS 15150 VENTURA BLVD 630PM - 11 PM
SUNDAYS @smorgasburgla 10AM - 4PM
No menu/website on their yelp or IG. PeonyWarrior or anyone else whoâs been - do they have veggie options as well? I eat meaty sandwiches however my romantic partner isnât on that train.
I was about ask the place was!
Dinner at Tacos La GĂźera on 59th Place. Came in with guisado dreams but temptation derailed me when I smelled another dinerâs carne a la plancha getting cooked.
Dressed two tacos up with cabbage, onion, cilantro, beans, and a smokey salsa macha, all relaxing on fresh made tortillas. 2 (large) beautiful tacos for $12.
Heading north I got drawn in by another umlaut, Tacos Los GĂźichos. Their side-by-side trompos are really beautiful. The sight of store-bought tortillas less so. 2 tacos al pastor for 6 dollars and change. I loved the marinade, and their salsas are really vibrant (itâs DF style, so no avocado salsa), but the tortillas were a bummer. Besides being store bought they spent too much time on the plancha and became a little brittle.
