Nice! Yes, a very good happy hour menu too.

Wow, great pics! Any particular recs for Planta? Happen to be going later this week. I was a little worried about the vegan sushi (I’m not vegan so I worry about comparing it to actual fish)

Thanks @theplankt.

I once went to a bday party there with lotsa good dishes, but it was a while ago and I can’t remember my faves. Our favorite this visit was the burger - this was praise from my carnivorous husband. The croquetas were tasty but I’d ask for them extra crispy next time. The guacamole was a little watery with both the pico de gallo and the sikil pak in it, but flavor is good and a spoonful was a good condiment on the burger. I’d also go with @Dommy suggestion of sushi.

That isn’t fair though. Think of them more as inventive veggie morsels! They are so good.

David Lee, the chef behind Planta used to run one of the top fine dining restaurants in Toronto when I lived there. Glad to hear Planta is making good food using whole ingredients!

These things are like $8 after a concert now. Makes the $10 that Dog Haus charges reasonable, w/ higher ingredient quality too.

Sadly the chain is bankrupt - all the usual factors for a fast expanding restaurant brand in the current stagflationary environment. Remains to be seen if they will emerge from bankruptcy on more stable financial footing, or if they are on the path to liquidation.

That’s a bummer.

One thing I’ve thought about on my visits to the MDR location is how hard it must be to keep that large space full.

Agreed. I like the food (and I’m a carnivore) and the setting, plus it’s really close to us. But the space is huge and it’s concerning that one can get a walk-in table on a Saturday night without a problem.

Never been to Dog Haus, but I feel like this, broadly, is really widespread (at least in LA). Meaning, ā€œcheapā€ places (w/ seemingly lower-quality ingredients) aren’t that much cheaper than places w/ what seemingly obviously better quality ingredients, so why not just spend a bit more to get the ā€œbetterā€ stuff?

And, for some reason, that calculus really makes me sad.

Proximity and convivence. He’s comparing the price of a danger dog that is there cooked and waiting for you when are leaving the venue, often late at night when most places are closed. You are totally paying for the premium for that and the experience. The vendors know this and are organized. They all have Venmo signs and if you look at them closely they often to the same guy.

yes but 10+ years ago the difference between a dog haus dog and a danger dog was damn near 100%, now it’s barely 25%.

This one was free. They were giving them away in the parking lot of a business I patronized. :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:
