September 2026 Rundown

Mayura!

sei

In addition to Mayura, Hey, Sunshine Kitchen (fast casual); Versailles; Tara’s Himalayan; new location of Pizzeria Sei; Metro Cafe; Moto Ramen.

As an aside, aside from Hey, Sunshine Kitchen and Metro, I haven’t been to the above locations in several yrs.

Depending on time of day, you could also hit up the Donut King w/ the fantastic young coconut smoothie.

Same mini-mall as Mayura!

Hurtado BBQ in Arlington, TX. Extraordinary

Thank you, all! We went to Mayura and wished we had more people, and more time. We shared the spinach dosa and an appetizer that was vegetarian, dairy free and spicy. It was served in a bowl (with soup/broth) and had three or four savory doughnuts floating in it.

With tax, before tip approx $35 for the two of us. I’d go back over and over, regardless of who’s with me. There’s a large menu, lots of tables and they serve alcohol. The level of people watching reminded me of being in a successful deli.

Teta (Smorgasburg) - “California-inspired Lebanese food”

The typical Smorgasburg experience. I think: isn’t this exciting? All these places to choose from!

And then reality: Zankou is miles better. I fail to see any inspiration in this food.

Late breakfast down in OC at Al Baraka. First time I was kinda disappointed in their ful. Usually the olive oil is warm, with garlic and lemon. Pretty bland today.

Obligatory Little Saigon breakfast.

Seen some new restaurants and many of the ones I reviewed/been to before.

Cakes by Dad (Temple City)

Ordered some mooncakes for my parents thanks to the EaterLA listicle. The pastry was super tender and thin. Very delicate and the fillings were just right. Delightful!

Side note: that listicle was lazy AF. The Buttery (OC) closed months ago and shouldn’t be on the list. Basic research would have found this since The Buttery announced their closure on IG. The list was pretty much a repeat of prior lists with maybe Cakes by Dad being the only new addition.

Good Alley (Temple City)

I can see how this place is popular. It’s reliably good. Food is solid and service is great. What more could you ask for?

Highlights: XO cucumbers, scallion noodles, XLB

Nandao Rice & Noodle (Monterey Park)

Was @Clayfu -influenced. Weekends are crazy here. Between their in-house waitlist system and Yelp waitlist, people were queued up in random order…like the two systems were not working concurrently. The staff is working super hard to resolve the queue while also turning tables quickly. It’s kind of amazing to watch.

Hainan chicken rice was pretty good. Not Chef @JLee amazing, but good enough to scratch the itch.

Hangari Kalguksu (KTown)

It’s very possible that this is the world’s best chicken noodle soup. Rich and pure chicken flavor, perfectly chewy knife-cut noodles that likely cook in the stock so the starch releases to give it a beautiful texture.
Also got the oyster porridge. Very solid dish, but that kalguksu reigns supreme.

Valet parking in the lot will run you $5-6, and the best time to go is within an hour of opening. The place fills quickly. The team works efficiently to turn tables without making you feel rushed.

Highly recommended…if anyone knows where I can get this in the OC, I’d be much obliged.

i got randomly kicked off the yelp waitlist multiple times. Also at one point 7 tables were in front of me on yelp, but i got called to be seated ha

That’s a cold #19?

That was a #1

Cassell’s and Bakers Bench yesterday. One dreadful photo taken that’s not worth posting.

The onion rings at Cassell’s are some of my favorite in LA. I’ve only had them at the Chinatown location, so buyer beware.

Manila Inasal

Second visit. Definitely go here if you’re in the area! Strong effort.

Mizlala West Adams. The portions are generous the food tastes fresh. Nice fluffy pita. Zhoug was punchy. Great neighborhood joint that I’d frequent often if I lived nearby. I wish they used real plates and silverware when dining in.

My biggest complaint about eating there. And when you get it to go and ever order an extra pita they always forget it. And by always I mean at least 4 times for me

I’ve lived in LA my entire life, traveled all over, dined at *** and World’s 50 Best #1, and just got told off for a dress code violation for the first time ever, anywhere in the world. R+D Kitchen on Montana Avenue. For wearing a backwards hat. While sitting at the bar. After playing 2 hours of tennis.

R+D Kitchen is probably my single most frequented restaurant (I grew up down the street and still live nearby) and this won’t stop me from coming back, and rules are rules…but what a fucking joke.
