Shuba - Seledka Pod Shuboi

Our classic Soviet era new year eve table stable staple. A layered root vegetable and pickled herring salad far better than our other mayonnaise based offerings. The literal translation is “herring under a fur coat”.

Happy new year to all my friends here and I miss you and will be back in the next year in the big city. One of my shots will be dedicated to y’all tonight.

Happy to lay out the steps if anyone wants to bother

Is that mayonnaise soup or is it just all on top? My people do love Mayo!

Fun fact. We’re the second highest consuming people per capita. You’ll never guess who’s first

Yeah, it’s still layered, just in a bowl.

Going with the USofA, but could also be over-consumption of oeufs mayo or aioli so maybe the French or Italians?

Last time I went to the Russian Vodka Room, I brought a friend from the former CCCR. She’s been in the U.S. for about 40 years. She has no trace of an accent. She dresses like an American. The staff immediately addressed her in Russian. They just knew.

Had to look it up. I thought it was Chile from some travel show, but Russia tops it . Addressing guests in mother tongue is part of the charm  I’ve only been to the Brighton beach spots myself in NY. Ages ago

Well, there’s a Tashkent Market on 6th Ave. now, so c’mon back!

Oh I saw that on last visit! Tripped me out. Honestly we never really eat the home food when traveling or even out in LA. Too many other tasty cultures available

Happy 2026
