Si Mon! A Man A Plan A Canal Panama

Really enjoyed my first visit - excellent cocktails and food in the old West Beach Cafe/James Beach Space

Hamachi crudo
Fried Chickens drummetes - fantastic batter/coating - no idea what in it but really different and tasty
Love the Shrimp Dumpling in Curry Sauce w/ coconut rice.
Fried Plaintainos with a spice sauce and a garlic sauce - addictive!

A taste of Panama, near the (Venice) canal!

Heading there Wednesday night. Anyone been recently and have some recco’s? Anyone tried the Miso Duck?

I freaking loved the Miso Duck. My best bite so far this year.

Expensive - 80 bucks I think

It is aged and funky (to me in a very good way, but I can see it not being everyone’s taste)

Thanks for the late reply.

I concur that it was a great dish, unfortunately we over ordered or I would have eaten the whole plate, but at least I had some the next day. I found the fried chicken legs not as palatable. Felt like I inhaled the dusting everytime I went to take a bit, a bit offputting.

sorry - not sure why that post was suddenly “in my face” many months after the question.

No worries. Thought you might have been doing a deep dive. LOL

Last night Si Mon was hopping. We left at 8:30 and there was a line out the door. Really delicious food. I’m picture adverse when eating. Yelp has all the pictures if interested.

CORN CEVICHE -sweet corn, corn leche de
tigre, crispy corn, plantain chips. Simple and delicious.

KANPACHI CEVICHE -coconut leche de tigre, crispy corn, red onion, plantain chips. Very good, loved the marinade, but some pieces were fishier than others.

SHRIMP DUMPLINGS -
coconut bisque, charred scallion oil, herbs. Fantastic dish with some heat from the chili oil. Seemed to have curry in the sauce but not listed on the menu. We could have drunk it from the bowl.

KANPACHI EN BANANA LEAF -
coconut oil, makrut lime, Thai basil, roasted garlic. We got the coconut rice to go with this. A bit sweet but matched well and tasty. Stunning dish! Possibly my bite of the year.

My partner and I loved Si Mon. The service was excellent and all the food was very good to great, most dishes being great. They do the order everything at once. My strategy is to order what we want first then add on the mains. This worked well here. My only minor quibble is the $50 corkage fee, but the wine list has nothing under $60ish, so I get it. We will be back.

W: I agree with other posters. The duck and kanpachi in banana leaf were great. Patacones were also great — really loved the garlic sauce. I would characterize the food here as Caribbean, and it’s the best Caribbean food I’ve ever had.

p.s.: their house rum is amazing. I didn’t ask about it and I don’t know what role they have in making it. I also don’t know how it’s made. To me it smelled like an aged rhum agricole and didn’t taste Panamanian.

P: The food is very tasty. It’s fun to eat a very different flavor profile. I hope to come back. Great service too.

For some reason I didn’t realize this was in Venice! Going to put it on the list to check out

If you didn’t try the Tuna Carpaccio on Yuca Tostada you really missed out. I know it sounds boring and more of the same but it’s anything but. I loved the Kanpachin and Duck as well but left saying I could just order the entire raw bar and a couple starters (the dumplings, which my kids always insist on were another surprisingly great dish) and die happy. The only thing I didn’t love were the chicken drumsticks which he gets a ton of press for.

Did they stop weekend brunch service? I remember reading about it but don’t see anything on their website about brunch.

Gone for the Winter with a promise to return Spring or Summer.
