Somi Somi - Korean Ice Cream Swirls

Somi Somi, near the corner of Wilshire and Western in KTown already has quite a following. On a Friday night, there was a line out the door of the smallish store on the second floor of the shopping center.

They have four different kinds of ice cream to choose from, and each week they feature a different pair of mixes. The four kinds are matcha, ubi, milk and black sesame. You can get any one of them singly, or get one of the featured mixes. Then you pick the filling, either red bean or nutella. Finally, you pick a cone or a bowl. Here’s the menu.
Once you order, you wait for them to call your name. They make the cones, which are shaped like a fish, fresh right in front of you. Then they let them cool briefly before being filled. Here’s a picture of the mold, and a school of cooling fish cones.

Once the cone is filled with the filling, and the ice cream is swirled-in, you get to pick the topping, and whether you want a strawberry or macaroon. We picked the cone (not the bowl), with mixed ubi and milk ice cream. Our filling was red bean. Our topping was crushed Oreos, and a macaroon.

The ice cream is tasty, and didn’t last long.

I really didn’t like their taiyaki. The ones at Zion Market are a much better rendition.

PSA: coming to Sawtelle (La Grange at Sawtelle).
