Oh did not know that, that is super sad

I think their cooked dishes are still really good and their dim sum consistency seems to have bounced back a bit. I’m just thankful we just have a legit dim sum/cantonese restaurant in South Bay. Tried the newish salted egg yolk spare ribs and they were quite tasty if slightly one note.

Catching up to this a little late - how were the mochi?

I don’t get to Jefe’s enough, but every time I go there, I love it a little bit more…

  • downer: they no longer give free chips, but ah well.
  • lengua quesadilla: so good. their corn tortilla is my favorite. Crusty outside, fluffy interior. The cheese is oozing and gets that burnt, gloopy, crisp in places. And the lengua is to die for. Simply seasoned and impossibly tender without being too fatty/greasy. And cut to the perfect bit size, call it ~1cm cubed
  • pupusa: i’ve tried all their variants but have decided the plain cheese is best. I wish it had a bit more cheese. but the lightly dressed, finely chopped cabbage salad and the orange sauce goes so well with this!
  • mojarra ala plancha: i’d never gotten this, but it’s a simply grilled, very large and fresh tilapia. Blackened seasoning. Perfectly grilled. The meat was flaky and tender. And this fish was FAT. I was stuffed, even with my two sons eating a good portion of it. Combined with fresh corn tortillas, more of the orange sauce and their guacamole salsa… If I had to rank this vs. the snook zarandeado at Coni? I take this. I’m a simple eater and I love how simple this prep is. No sauces, no onions, etc. Just grilled fish. And the corn tortillas put it over the top for me. And at $19.99, it’s a helluva deal.

Pretty straight forward. I like the strawberry the best and they are all handmade. I wouldn’t compare them to nearby Chikara/Sakura as that wouldn’t be fair. It’s such a nice space to relax in.

Down towards PV/Torrance/Redondo, Indian food has been a weak spot. We’ve tried a couple places… Some popular place in Redondo that was very “Americanized” with muted spicing and Copper Pot, which seems to get shut down with alarming frequency… So, tonight, we tried Nira which is a new-ish South Indian joint replacing the old Calf & Chick (I think?) that shared a building with Wendys on Sepulveda.

I’m not an Indian food expert but I do know that I want bold spicing, high quality ingredients and not too oil-laden food. We ended up sharing butter chicken, palak paneer, a fish curry, goat coconut curry and pepper chicken. I can’t do the food justice with my descriptions but what I’d say is they have the ability to tone down the heat without muting the spices. Every plate was cleaned off.

Worth a try in my opinion. The restaurant was mostly empty while we were there and I’d love to see this place succeed!

Great find will bookmark. Have you ever tried makkah market? I think they are Pakistani but the food is great.

You know, I walked in to Makkah for the first time ever a few weeks back but just wandered around. Didn’t actually order but saw a good takeout business going on! Seeing the picks on Yelp reminded me of one miss at Nira… the rice. For Indian food, I like the long, thin basmati grains that turn out light and almost fluffy. The rice at Nira is a bit thicker and denser. I’m generally a rice over naan guy, but in this case, I opted for the naan which is great and a very generously sized portion.

This looks great and look forward to trying. Our go to has always been al noor. It’s Pakistani but really great food. Only thing is I tell everyone to just take out as the dining room is not great…

Speaking of Makkah market, so good. Great bold flavors all with a kick. Tandoori chicken was nice and smoky, aloo was super flavorful, and tikka was smooth with small kick of heat. I also bought some goat to make a stew in a couple of days they sell both fresh and frozen fresh comes in on Friday. They are selling whole fresh goats if anyone is interested.

They have Mexican mangos whose roots are from India and they will be having Pakistani mangos in about a month.
