South Bay Staples

Spoon House has always been the most popular of the two. Is there something that Akane does better than Spoon House?

I think Akane is more Diner style than Spoonhouse. Spoonhouse is more Japanese Italian focused, so in general I have gone there straight for Pasta vs Akake when I am hankering for Hamburg. I once had the insta-nap combo they are famous for with Spaghetti and Hamburg. The pasta was okay. Definitely going to stick with just the Hamburg when I go there.

Akane’s hamburger steak and tonkatsu ravials Komatsu. The flavor is a little bit different though. And what Dommy said.

KuKu Cafe, Inglewood.

  1. Herb with Walnut Frittata
  2. Lamb Shank with Herb Rice with Fava Bean
  3. Tahdig with chicken
  4. Pistacho Baklava.

Good to very good food, friendly service. Owner gave me some topping samplers because I couldn’t make up my mind. Will go back soon to try other items, but would order the Baklava and Baba Ganoush (not pictured) again.

Tokyo Central PCH. The buffet table is priced at $10.99/lb. Featuring a great variety of options. The pictured Lobster Roll is included in the selection. I walked away for a few minutes and they were all gone @11:30 am. They were going bring out another batch 30 minutes later. Not going to wait.

Pura Vita.

This was an accident I needed a place to use the restroom. No car atm. I ain’t using the pier bathrooms without bleach wipes with 5 min contact time lol

Always wanted to try this place.

This “meatball” sandwich did not disappoint. Minor quibble would be the bread broke off in certain area. Lentil meatball, cashew cheese, tomato sauce, and grilled bread with flour from Italy.

King Mediterrano, falafel “bowl”. It’s not Kareem’s falafel but they give you so much food here.

What’s underneath rice and tomato parsley salad?

It’s rice with cabbage, tomatoes, carrots also I ordered a side of tahini and garlic sauce. The garlic sauce is really good!

The onigiri place at Tokyo Central is solid! The rice is a bit “dry” for my taste, but it’s warm while the nori stays crisp and the fillings are bit more elevated, like wagyu with wasabi or pork jowl with green pepper chili. Bit pricer than most onigiri at $4.99 but worth it for a nice cheap snack!

I don’t know how long that onigiri place is going to stay in business. I found it odd they don’t have more food court variety such as ramen, udon, or Japanese cafe food.

Got a soft serve that was solid.

Shin shen gumi not the best yakitori but still very good and the atmosphere is top notch great for drinking beers

Is this a place in NYC?

IMO Akane is better than Spoon House. The hamburg and seafood pastas are superior in execution and quality ingredients.

My son has been on a quest for a cubano. His fallback is the American bar food-ized version at Torrance Tavern, which even he admits is mediocre. So I found My Havana Vieja, which is a fun looking place in Harbor City with an expansive Cuban menu. As much as I wanted to like it though, it was a B- type of place. The cubano fillings were fine but the bread was flaccid and the cheese unmelted. It really needed to be on the grill press for at least a few minutes longer to get the bread nice, flat and crusty, the cheese melted and the temperature high enough that the fat and juices were released. We also got the grilled half chicken which was actually flash fried and a tad overcooked. Will give it another try soon.
