South Bay Staples

Went yesterday and their coffee machine was down, so came back again today (after the article) and they were closed at noon - they totally sold out of baked goods first thing in the morning and guess they called it a day. Looks like they’re gonna be a lot busier than Two Guns was.

That’s a great looking burger! Wow, what are they using for the patty?

Cruised on down to the soft opening of Oh! Banzai, a handroll concept in my beloved Can-Zo’s former space.

Reasonable South Bay prices for
Japanese portions, be warned. Quality over quantity. 3 handrolls and miso soup for $18, 5 for $26 at lunch time. If you go for dinner they have a couple of free oden.

i’m so mad i’m only now learning about can-zo – a vision perfectly executed – and i’ll never be able to enjoy it except via yelp.

What happened to Redbo Pho in Palos Verde? Google says its ‘temporarily closed’ but did it ever actually open up? What’s the story here?

oh wow I didn’t know that they even opened in South Bay, but looks closed.

yeah, not clear what happened… seems like they may have been open for a little bit? It’s a shame, between Suga and Redbo, I do appreciate the attempt to upscale the food on the peninsula, but looks like it’s gonna be tough…

on the Pho side though, we did hit the new Pho place near Del Amo next to the Marugame… blanking on the name. But it’s solid. Bun Bo Hue is not quite as spicy as I’d like and perhaps a touch on the sweet side, but I appreciate that had a nice big chunk of pork blood and a cut of pork hock, although I guess they drew the line at the bull you know what. But given my usual other Pho option is Pho Hana at Pen Center, this is a very welcom addition.

Couldn’t you still??? I’m like totally intrigued!

Checked out the newly opened Colossus location at 511 S Harbour in San Pedro. It’s essentially the same deal as their Long Beach location - full menu (dinner menu starts at 3pm), sit-down, plus their excellent selection of bread, coffee, and pastries. It’s a very welcome addition to downtown and judging by the crowd this afternoon, the community will be coming out in force for Kristin & Nick’s new venture. I had an omelette with toast and a side salad - it was very good. Also got a BLT which was great. Looking forward to going back for dinner. Given the shifting demographics in Pedro and the upcoming waterfront development, this new Colossus location looks like it’s positioned to do really well and I suspect is a harbinger of more upscale/trendy things to come in the local dining scene.

GF and i had daytime valentines date in south bay.

Really miss otafuku. Table next to me had some Onigiri with shirasu in it - i’m assuming this is off menu. Really wanted to try but knew i wouldn’t have the appetite

Went to Chikara mochi and took it to monkish to hang out. I love their sakura mochi so much :sob:

Afterwards hit 99 ranch to get crab (currently 12.99/lb and they’re pretty healthy). Steamed at home and had with sake - we hate the Vday dinner traffic.

Have you tried Sakuraya Mochi (just down the street from Chikara)? They are not as beautiful, but I prefer them flavorwise. They are both amazing though. I think Chikara Mochi for gifts because they are so beautiful and Sakuraya for myself/and to share with friends/family.

This is not very “foodie” but can I make a special plug for Slip Bar on Narbonne in Lomita? Their burgers are solid but they have Taco Tuesdays when they serve “hard tacos.” The carne asada is fine, well seasoned, nothing spectacular. The tortillas aren’t artisan or hand-made. The salsa is pretty pedestrian but tasty. But they grill the tortillas on the hard top so they are crisp without being deep-fried and combined with the asada, some cheese, crema, lettuce and salsa at $6 for 2 plus a pint of Modelo for $5 more, it’s my guilty pleasure. Somehow the combination of everything together just works even if the individual pieces aren’t necessarily anything special.
