Looking for some good Sri Lankan food. Any recs? Especially jonesing for some hoppers since a recent trip to London where hoppers can be found at Hoppers!
Welcome.
Apey Kade and Kurrypinch have been mentioned within the past few mos (and a little less than a yr ago).
Seaburry does have Sri Lankan food, but I don’t know if anyone’s tried it…
I have not been to any of the above, but you’ll “reviews” of the first two easily using the search tool.
There’s also a thread for Sri Lankan in the OC, but the last post was from 04/2021 (IIRC).
Baja Subs has hoppers on weekends.
Ugh would go to Hoppers twice a month if it were in LA. It’s bad out here, especially if you’re not near the valley.
Kurrypinch (thai-town-ish) does a great string hopper pilau.
I still recommend it, even though I had an annoying service experience last time I was there. (tldr - had a server chase me out to my car and accuse me of not settling my bill, even though I did it with another staff member, smh)
You’re not going to find anything directly comparable to Hoppers, London in Los Angeles. Their Sri Lankan food/atmosphere/beverage program is just not happening here.
Having said that Apey Kade is good for all the hoppers. You’ll spend the meal chatting with the chef/owner in a strip mall restaurant with four tables, but he’ll prepare your hoppers fresh, and they’ll be good. The steam tray curries are also very tasty, but nothing like what you’d find at Hoppers, London.
Baja Subs is a step down in atmosphere/refinement, but a step up in variety and authenticity. It also only makes hoppers when the owner decides he wants to. Usually on the weekend. Sometimes not at all.
Kurrypinch is a big step up in atmosphere, but a step down in authenticity. No hoppers.
Sri Lanka Day, in August, is the best chance to experience the food and culture of Sri Lanka. It used to be on the Santa Monica Promenade, but moved to Pasadena last year. No word on this year’s venue.
Excellent info. Thanks!
