Strasbourg 2026

Going for the weekend.

We really liked Le Bistrot d’Antoine as a neighborhood restaurant (which would be better than the large majority of French restaurants in the Bay area)

La Cuiller a Pot was also very good

Chez Yvonne

crudites

tarte a l’oignon

Choucroute garnie: at the top is a liver quennele, there’s pork belly, smoked collar, and some kind of sausage. Meats were all good. Cabbage was lightly fermented and delicate.

Maennerstolz “fierté de l’homme” (man’s pride): good lightly smoked sausage

Kugekhoph glacé, disappointed that it was ice cream shaped in a mini-kugelhoph mold rather than a semifreddo-like pastry like I had in Paris a few years ago. Still good with the Gewurztraminer marc (grappa).

rhubarb tart with a ton of meringue

Nice place for traditional local specialties. Seemed like a lot of locals / regulars.

No Toto.

Ondine: wanted a light dinner after choucroute etc. for lunch. No detaied menu.

first amuse, beet and horseradish infusion: very delicate, neglected to photograph until I’d drunk it. Kept doing that.

second amuse, trout tartlet: nice bite with trout rillettes and eggs

third amuse, chawan mushi chives, almonds, walnut oil, really good

Alsatian Pinot Noir

tortellini with cabbage, pak choy, carrot in ginger, coriander, ? broth

Bugey Altesse

laminated brioche, butter, smoked yellow beets in celery root sauce with lacto-fermented applesauce

Vino di Alma Palmento Bianco

white asparagus pickled in housemade chickpea miso with veloute of asparagus, wild garlic oil, etc.

Brand & Fils 2014 Riesling Kefferberg

trout confit with turnip puree & pickles: very nice

sorrel sorbet with rhubarb sauce & brunoise: really a palate-cleansing entremet, delightful

Domaine Colin Perles Grises Pineau d’Aunis Pet Nat NV

Never heard of such a thing. Quite good.

vanilla pudding with Corsican citron, very good

digestifs and mignardises, all good

Great tiny place. Perfect for after such a heavy lunch.

(Click for video.) Found a place that has the kind of kugerhopf glacé I’m looking for (Fink Stuebel), but unfortunately for me they’re on vacation this week, so we wandered around the neighborhood looking at a lot of places and finally ended up at La Bedaine.

Exceptional.

There’s also a page of flammekuches.

Duck breast “gravlax”: I guess raw ham? Rich and ducky.

Oeuf parfait, didn’t taste as it had the same sauce as my plat.

Bouchee a la Reine: I didn’t expect the vol au vent, but apparently that’s a definitive element of the dish. Very nice eaten all together with veal, mushroom, and toasted spaetzle.

Choucroute garnie, more reasonable portions of meat than at other places. The jerky-like bit was too dry, otherwise all good.

Cheese was good.

Didn’t get a photo of the pavlova, which was really good.

House-made digestif with basil, citron, Corsican citron, and creme de framboise came with the menu. Very nice, not too alcoholic (20-25%).

I’ll definitely return on future visits. Careful sourcing, nice combination of tradition and creativity.

Au Pont Corbeau

Walked in around 8:00, told us to come back at 9:00.

White asparagus with warm lentil salad and soft-boiled egg, delicious. Best white asparagus dish yet.

Potato pancakes with fromage frais, good. Local specialty.

Pork knuckle with sauerkraut, ditto.

Panna cotta with rhubarb and crumble, very good, barely sweet.

Haut-Koenigsburg, like a Knickerbocker Glory, very good.

Great place with mostly locals, would go back any time.

Went to La Vielle Ensigne for lunch.

Good goose (rather than the duck I saw elsewhere) foie gras, nice with a glass of Gewürztraminer vendage tardive. I didn’t know they produced foie gras in Alsace. Very nice potato brioche.

Sander (pikeperch) with choucroute. Correctly cooked, nice crisp skin. Choucroute was very good, fermented a bit more than elsewhere.

Really good spaetzle.

Excellent vegetable side, nice bit helping.

Didn’t need the sauce (simple béarnaise).

Good cheese plate.

Local version of baba is shaped like a kugelhopf and soaked in kirsch. Good.

Nice place, friendly service, tables spaced out more than elsewhere.
