We have always found Trader Joe’s house brand chocolate mint chip to be delish! Last time out it sold for $4.99. Good price for the amount of ice cream in the container…
I’ve heard the milkbar grocery store cookies are horrible, that’s likely most of what you’d see at 99c stores as they try to clear them out? Also I’m sure they’re closer to their best before date because of that.
Salt and Straw uses dry milk and xanthum gum in their base recipe. They’re going for more of a traditional Americana ice-cream style that isn’t custard-based, so I believer there’s an intention to those “additives” rather than a compromise.
If not Salt&Straw, Marianne’s ice cream (if you can find it in LA) has that sort of old-school Thrifty’s drug store style and is really additive.
I generally prefer the luxuriousness of custard-based ice cream, but I recently had this fennel/maple ice cream at S&S and it was one of the best scoops I’ve ever tasted. I’ve had too many good non-custard based scoops to dismiss it anymore. But I still will never get a vanilla scoop that isn’t custard-based.
Does jenis splendid sell at supermarkets?
I do love Salt and Straw! They have a pretty good hit rate with me on their flavors. Also agree with you on custard based (often called French) Vanilla ice cream. Have to say though I haven’t had a great one in years. Even Sweet Rose Creamery which generally love their Vanilla is just meh. Not enough Vanilla or custard flavor
This is the base they use in their book but I read somewhere (but can’t find the article in the moment) that their commercial base is different. Similar to Jeni’s which has differences between her commercial base and the one in the book.
It’s surprising how many well known brands aren’t making their own ice cream base but buy it commercially, e.g. Straus in California
Yes Whole Foods carries Jeni’s Splendid. Its the most expensive pint they carry. Andrew Zimmern always posts about Jeni’s.
Thanks for the heads up!
Jeni’s was around $12 at Whole Foods. For comparison, Van Leeuwen was around $7.
Damn I’ll have to get down to whole foofs
I read this thread for 3 mins, then processed to finish 2 pints of Sweet rose salted caramel and butternut pecan in my freezer. Damage taken!
My understanding is there are expensive legal obstacles to making your own base in California.
Found only one at local Whole Foods, and I bought it. Not sure what’s going on with the out of stock situation.
I see them all the time at the one on Wilshire and 23rd in SaMo. Ice cream stocking seems super weird; Ben and Jerry’s was on sale for like half off at Ralph’s last week and was absolutely cleaned out, went yesterday and it’s on sale for slightly more than last week’s sale but fully stocked shelves. Obviously that’s a much bigger operation than Nancy’s but still.
How is Costco’s Ice Cream?
A solid vanilla option at a very good price imo… I live alone so this is not a match for me, but if you have multiple children to get high on sugar with you, highly recommend It’s sweet tho.
Follow the link for more of their ice cream selections and frozen treats
Too thick for me. I would rather pay more for HD or Tillamook.
I didn’t realize Home Depot had ice cream? Is it in their 5-gallon orange buckets?
I’ll show myself out now…
@Wakko11 a 5 gallon bucket will be the death of me. I’m unable to stop eating whichever container size of ice cream in my field of vision. I usually go for HD strawberry or the ones listed below whenever they’re on sale
