Supermarket Ice Cream

I’m seeing them all over these days. Ralph’s etc

I very much appreciate that the cartoon scoop on the pint is the same shape of scoop that you used to get in store. Chocolate Malted Crunch hits every single time.

I’ve been wondering about this since I saw Max and Helen’s was using Thrifty for their shakes. I always assumed the shape of the scoop was most of the appeal, is Thrifty ice cream (in its current iteration) decent quality? Was it ever? It’s been maybe 40 years since I last had it.

Yup, that’s where I got mine (Fresh Fare). There’s quite a large section (gallon size?) in the usual ice cream area and then there’s half case (!!!) of the 1 pint by itself in the “header” of the aisle.

Not an ice cream connoisseur, but, yes, I think so. You’re never going to mistake this for McConnell’s, but it melts decently and not too gummy (compared to, say, Maeda-en, which I find SUPER gummy). Nice, strong chocolate-y flavor (but don’t expect complexity).

For $3.99 (pint), I imagine you could do a lot worse.

They sell the scoop too:

It was always ‘good enough’ and had lots of overrun so the texture was always softer. Tastes like nostalgia! Back in the day you could get 3 kids scoops for under 2$.

it’s the best of the cheap ice creams - tastes the same today as it ever did.

I think CVT is great. Would buy if more often if it wasn’t so expensive.

It’s industrial, which is why Silverton chose it for the Max & Helen milkshakes over the premium stuff she prefers. The gums etc. give the right texture. They talked about it when she was on the Dave Chang Show.

With the added benefit of nostalgia being as good an excuse as any to use cheap ice cream in your $15 milkshake.

$15 would shake me up.

recently, I’ve been very into the Tillamook neapolitan ice cream. perfect vanilla, chocolate bits in the chocolate, strawberry bits in the strawberry.

I like this even though I don’t necessarily love white chocolate.
