Supermarket Ice Cream

I am not a huge fan of TJ’s vanilla. I find a little sweet. Right now we are enjoying the Umpqua we are finding at Grocery Outlet for about $4.50. Really nice Vanilla Flavor. Creamy. Also, this week Smart and Final has Quarts of Tillamook ice cream on sale for $5.50 (with $5 if you do the digital coupon thing)

The store was out of Marianne’s Peanut Butter Cup the other night so I got Tillamook Chocolate Peanut Butter instead. The peanut swirl was rock-hard, couldn’t even get through it with the spoon, so it wasn’t so much of a defect that there was very little of it.

Tillamook’s new Oregon Cherry flavor is really satisfying my summer ice cream craving.

Oh wow!! I was just about to start the hunt for Jeni’s Cherry Sparkler flavor! Will keep an eye out for this one!

This week Tillamook is 2 for $7 at Vons/Ralphs/Pavillions. Quarts and Sandwiches.

I’m loving TJ Vanilla compared to Costco’s.

It’s a sweet treat for the summer and I don’t need to buy twice as many.

Then again, I enjoy it so much because it has been awhile since I had ice cream and I have a sweet tooth. And that I tried the same TJ Ice Cream in my friend’s freezer that’s been opened for likely a year. That tasted way worse.

My favorite fruit by far is cherry. I just can not get enough of fresh cherries in the summer. Cherry pie is one of my favorite things ever. I almost always top my ice cream with maraschino type cherries (currently loving Morello brand). I’ve been doing this for so long, I really haven’t found an ice cream that has satisfied my ultimate cherry wishes like this.

That was until I heard that Jeni’s had come out with a flavor called Sparkling Cherry Pie. Why sparkling? Because the cream base is soaked in Szechuan Peppercorns for a floral numbing taste! I was in Larchmont one night and headed straight to Jeni’s to finally try it!

And it was so good. It had that deep cherry flavor with some incredible balance with the floral and almost citrusy notes of the peppercorn. It was not numby but more tart. Would give this a big thumbs up!

Since I was at Larchmont, decided to pop by Salt and Straw after to see if they had a seasonal Sour Cherry Pie flavor and they did! We got a small scoop of that and just looking at it…. I’m like…. Where are the cherries!?!

The mix is this cherry pie with almond crust and a splash of amoretto. And you guessed it…. The almond extract flavor was just too strong! Salt and Straw Ice Cream is famous for its mix ins, and instead of cherries it was crust. Chunks Pasty almond crust. Bah. Maybe I got a bad scoop…. But I am not going to try it again.

Thanks to @mrgreenbeenz Tillamook Oregón Dark Cherry was put on my radar and I snagged a container at Smart and Final.

No joke. This tasted like cherry yogurt. I LOVE cherry yogurt. It had mostly very small cherry pieces, but it did have some bigger pieces which tasted like fresh cherries. It was really good for a super market ice cream.

Finally…. This summer has not been all cherries all the time, our actual favorite store bought ice cream this year has been Mini It’s-it! It’s-it just has the best chocolate shell of store ice cream and the ice cream inside is creamy and well balanced with the oatmeal cookie. A regular It’s-it is kinda big, so these are a great size for an after dinner treat. Would totally recommend picking these up if you are an ice cream sandwich fan

Sparkling Cherry Pie sounds intriguing.

Thanks for the heads up on mini It’s Its. I agree on smaller serving sizes. Gonna go look for these this week. It’s one of the reasons I have a hard time buying pints because 2 out of 4 family members in the house don’t really like ice cream. Who are these heathens and how are we family?

Highly recommended if you can find it. Reborn is a local coffee shop chain but interestingly enough we saw one in Kuala Lumpur. My wife got this for me at Zion Market. Have not seen this brand at any of the big chains like Ralph’s Vons Albertsons

Like Haagen Dazs coffee but a more well rounded coffee flavor and less cream + sugar. Only 5 ingredients.

Speaking of coffee, the previously mentioned Jeni’s has a great cold brew/coconut flavor:

looks great. i’ll have to search out their sorbets and catch them all. they have a flavor king pluot one which sounds good.

now if we could get Connie & Ted’s / Providence to sell their sorbets in markets, that would be a welcome addition.

I do not normally crave ice cream, but this has been hitting the spot recently (and I have been vaguely craving it):

If they only would get sherbets in the 1-pint size…

That is an absolute So Cal classic

Where can you buy thrifty pints? Rite aid?

Vicente Foods in Brentwood has them, just noticed them today. Love the look of the packaging

I don’t think Rite Aid exists anymore…
