Sushi Roku: Any good - Santa Monica specifically

Looking to also hit Shirube.

Rustic Canyon
Citrin/Melisse
Water Grill
R+D Kitchen

Are the options that come to mind first.

Been to a couple of Rokus and have only thought it to be just okay.

Not sure if it was just the one time I (tried) to go, but Shirube was PACKED. So make a reservation.

Not sure if there are budgetary constraints, but I think Brothers Sushi has gotten good reviews here.

I have never been to Sushi Roku, so I couldn’t comment about that. I like Kappo Osen, but it’s not a destination spot at all.

And if things outside of Japanese are on your radar, then I am a +1 for Rustic Canyon. Truly wonderful.

Thanks. Should have mentioned Japanese was requested with a budget consideration. I assume Roku is as good as Sugarfish. If so, the location is perfect.

Have to say, I thought Water Grill was pretty mediocre last time I was there. Neither location has ever impressed.

Ditto Sushi Roku being just ok. I wouldn’t waste your time or money there.

If it doesn’t have to be Santa Monica specifically (and I know that might be a big “if”) and if doesn’t only have to be sushi, then maybe Izakaya Hero in nearby Westwood? I’ve really enjoyed my few visits there, and I’ve also really enjoyed the sushi I’ve gotten there (but they’re not a sushi joint). Not cheap but not super expensive, either (IMHO).

In/near Santa Monica: Takuma, Miyako, Kappo Miyabi, Maru Sushi & Ramen, Aki Restaurant & Sasaya Izakaya may all fit the bill…

Ah, probably. It was awhile ago and my memory is not always the best.

Hit Shirube. 3/4 full on a Sat night at 7:30. Sashimi plate, daikon salad, sunomono & aburi shime saba. The sashimi was fresh and tastey. All other dishes were pretty good. Nothing great and not a destination but a decent choice in SM. Caught the Copa America 3rd place at the newly reopened JPs on Wilshire at 9th…crap beer selection and full of single males…Meh…

I’ll be checking the other recs in this thread-thx
