Tamale Recommendations

I know this comes up during holiday time, but not so much otherwise.

So, am wondering what are some current recommendations for outstanding, or at least consistently good, tamales–either to dine in or to take away in larger numbers for an off-season gathering.

Open to any type or style (I really liked the Yucatecan versions at La Flor in the past, but haven’t been there for a while).

Thanks.

I like Sandra’s Tamales in Whittier. Masa is light, great filling to masa ratio.

I live in Sherman Oaks so I go to Me Gusta Tamales in Pacoima.

If you search the boards there are several tamale discussions with great info.

Edit: as pointed out by @JThur01 Me Gusta changed their name. So I am adding their website URL to this post.

my standby is tamales elena on wilmington at 110th. the ratio of fillings to masa always favors fillings, the masa is never dry; their champurrado is also amazing. downside is that it’s takeaway only from the truck since they closed their storefront in bell gardens.

@ipsedixit recommended this place to me in El Monte

+1 for Sandra’s
+1 for La Flor de Yucatán

We pick up La Flor before each Christmas.

I will second Me Gusta, or as it now known, The Original Tamale Co.

I picked up another dozen from them yesterday. There haven’t been too many periods over the last few years where I haven’t had some in the freezer.

No idea that Me Gusta had changed names! Wonder if it was a change in ownership.

Big +1 for their tamales (but skip the salsa).

I wanted to like Tamales Alberto (on Temple, in Echo Park), but I didn’t.

Is me gusta at the Wellington Sq farmers market on Sundays?

I wonder too. Most importantly, the tamales seem unchanged.

I often drive there to pick up a dozen, and last time, noticed the receipt read The Original Tamale Co., but Me Gusta signage was still on the building and the website was still there. As of my Thursday visit, the Me Gusta signage was off the building and when I came home and checked the Me Gusta website, it wasn’t there.

I can’t tell with their new name/website, but Me Gusta used to go to a lot of Farmer’s Markets. I know they were at the Santa Clarita Farmer’s Market, in Ventura and Thousand Oaks.

They also are/were at the Brentwood FM on Saturdays.
