@ShadrackToussaint and I differ on the full restaurant but you won’t be disappointed by drinks and patties at the bar
I will do a write up! Entrees, snacks, and service all quite good. It’s also a big menu. Would be like reviewing the US as a whole having visited Minneapolis, Chicago, St Louis, and Houston if that analogy tracks.
There can be a false veneer at times to. I feel a lot of decisions are made to appeal to the general food lover who finds themselves at whatever caliber of restaurant
Too much knowledge, whether it’s of wine, service, food, whatever, can be a hindrance or a help depending
Like I’m comfortable enough that for the most part I’d rather be left to make my decision from the various menus and options the restaurant has curated
I’d much rather trust their greater choices and within that find my own way
One of my favorite dining experiences last year was when the server introduced herself to us like, “so you ready to order?”
Returned last night - place was humming. New menu changes awesome.
Same bread different cheese/pickled squash
Pickle plate of great summer veg
Surf Clam + Melon (Highlight)
Prawns with a delicious puttanesca-y sauce and fried enokis (huge)
Pork Belly, figs, pickled tomatillo (preferred this to the coulotte last time)
Same cookies
Trusted them with a few bottle choices and had a few delightful light reds.
Great timing
three stars

Why would anyone be looking for squidgy soup?
The Times is on it. [Better late…]
For those who aren’t subscribed / are blocked because of their VPN:
I feel like squidgy is a word I use for cheesy topped soup.
(I think Tejal is one of our best writers and one of my favorite people in the food world rn so I’m glad baby bistro got such a great review from her - she has a great pulse and read on the LA dining scene right now)
With that jazz cafe and baby bistro, chinatown is getting to be the new hip spot in LA it seems…
The new openings are indeed great! Archives of Us is also a gem
But the rest of Chinatown isn’t doing so great Yue Wa market closing this week, and the post office (which was operating at a loss) next week. The contrast is tough
Hope to go soon!
You mean that place in the same spot as that cool French bistro with the Blade Runner-futuristic dystopian noir vibes?
yes I haven’t tried the food but it’s an interesting spot. also right next to all the big concerts at the park. I went on jazz night once but it seems more of a “sceney” place to be honest
There just aren’t enough residents, most of the homes in the surrounding areas are single family, lack of density to support a supermarket, much less a post office.
Some say new development would push out the eldery but the businesses that they need are leaving because of the lack of development. There’s a way they can guarantee housing for the elderly and development but of course the city lacks initiative and a will so this will keep going until property landlords see a better business environment. They already own a bunch of properties sitting vacant.
Never listened to this podcast. You like? Who else has?
