Tired Of Terrible French Fries

I think I might have started this thread and I’ve found a lot of you here don’t have the same tastes as mine. Some you extroll which I think are simply crap. so perhaps I need to lay down some ground rules (a little late, I know). And start with the French Fry Reference Standard of Excellence - and that would have been Hal’s. If you don’t thing these were the best fries in L.A. then I will dismiss your expertise on this subject. If you never tried them, then you won’t know what we’re talking about. Places that came close, in descending order Belcampo. The Oinkster. HiHo burgers. If you mention The Apple Pan, you should be banned from this thread. You don’t know . Try these and come back. You’ll realize what you’re missing. Rebecca’s used to have the best - even better (very close to Hal’s, since Hal’s stole the recipe from the West Beach and the West Beach was a Bruce Marder joint, as was Rebecca’s. The latter were double friend in duck fat. BTW I got to New York often and I’m finding great frieds there to be downright routine. Even a restaurant like Joe Allen’s - known for their scene (and bit touristy) actually have pretty decent fries. Balthazaar and Pastis are better than anything in L.A.

uh, no you didn’t.

MrFoodiepants - I recommend you try the French fries at Gucci Osteria.

Belcampo was a disgrace but they used beef tallow in the fryer and their fries got a lot of positive reports here.

I missed this excellent headline.

How are the fries at Marvin?

I have not been to Marvin’s. I will give it a try and let you know.

The duck fat fries were even more delicious.

The fries I’ve had at “For the Win” (once in Whittier and once in Glendale) are excellent. V reminiscent of the McDonalds fry in its heyday.

If we are including frites, I still love Wurstkuche. If you’re looking for the McDonald’s style, Heavy Handed were great!

if you haven’t had heavy handed beef tallow fries I will dismiss your expertise on this subject.

A friend took me to heavy handed, I had never heard of it so I went clean and pure and I thought the burger was great, and the fries just ok. Nothing special. I like Five Guys fries better. runs

No, no argument from me (at least about the fries being okay). I would actually say that they’re better than okay, but I don’t crave them. And I don’t even live THAT far away.

Also can’t stand how loud the music is.

I think Metro Cafe (in Culver City/Marina del Rey) has great fries.

Agree. I was looking forward to the Heavy Handed fries, but they were just OK…

Same. I thought they were good, but my favorite fries remain the ones from Orleans and York because they are old skool fiest fries.

Again, they were very good for fries. But I like the ones at George’s in Boyle Heights and Win-Dow better. They salt them more. Also, I did not like the heavy handed burger at all. It’s short rib and was crazy beefy with no balance. I much perfer the Win-Dow burger.

Finally, we also tried the Heavy Handed dippy cones because we love those. They were a bit too waxy… Win-Dow’s again are better, but the best around is Dipped in El Segundo.

My friend who lives around the corner from HH brought Mayo, lettuce and tomato and added it to the burger. I was like what are you doing when she whipped it all out at the table. It was delicious. LOL

Commercial frozen fries are more prevalent than you’d guess.

Your Favorite Chef Is Probably Using These Frozen French Fries

I’ve tried the Lamb Westons. They’re not that bad.
