Toronto : relatively cheap and tasty stuff

Anyone have any new finds, or old favourites that don’t get enough love or traffic?

Bakeries, stores, hole in the walls, mom & pop restos, etc.

I’ll post my new finds and old favourites here.

Just had lunch today at Udupi Palace in little India. Dhosas were great as always!

Hey Prima, I was down at Queen W. and Spadina ish the last few days. And with Toronto Life’s food lovers guide for 2016 in hand, I tried Kanga and Kekou.

Kanga is a meat pie shop on Duncan Street just off Queen W. Had the traditional aussie which had a flavourful minced meat (beef) filling with a lovely flaky crust. Pies were around $7. They also have frozen in a box of 6 ($24 if I recall correctly).

Kekou is literally right next to Banh Mi Boys on Queen West and sell gelato made in house. I had lunch at Banh Mi Boys and then walked next door for dessert. =D The gelato flavours have an Asian spin…I had 2 flavorus - the soursop and the salted pineapple. I preferred the soursop, it just had more punch and was a little sweeter. Other flavours there were Vietnamese coffee, durian, whiskey green tea…black sesame and HK style milk tea. I did find the texture was different from regular “store” ice cream but their website says this is due to them not using stabilizers. A small cup costs about $4.

Enjoy! And happy chowing! =)

10 years later, under the radar stuff that provides Bang for the Buck is still something I seek out in Toronto.

I will give a shout out to Bricolage at 981 College Street. It’s a bakery run by a Korean pastry chef who trained in Japan. This bakery sells a nice selection of baked goods, including Japanese curry buns, German pretzel rolls, almond croissants, other Viennoiserie and Milk Bread.

Another spot I like on College Street is Garrafeira Bottle Shop, a Portuguese bottle shop that also serves coffee, pasteis de nata, and nice bifana sandwiches. They also sell some Portuguese cheeses.

Sadly, Kekou and Kanga, mentioned by Norman Wolf, have closed.

Udupi Palace in Little India on Gerrard St East is still going strong.

[Edit: Sadly, King’s Tacos has closed permanently]

I ordered some Sopa Azteca (Tortilla Soup) and chicken enchiladas to go from King’s Tacos at 1190 St Clair W West of Dufferin tonight. It was good!

Toronto’s Mexican food situation has improved a lot over the past decade, and over a dozen Mexican restaurants have sprung up along St Clair West. So far, Itacate and Kings Tacos are my favourites on St Clair West.

I still have half a dozen places I would like to try.

I have been ordering a lot of soups lately, and I’m comparing the Sopa Azteca and Chicken Consomme at various Mexican restaurants around town.

The soup cost around $19 CAD, for around a 1 litre serving. It could be a meal for one or a starter for 2. A whole chicken breast was included in the container.

Chicken enchiladas with green sauce, around $24 CAD

The Cake Smith in Bloor West Village, a Ukrainian bakery and deli.

I bought 12 cheese and potato pierogi, 2 sauerkraut mushroom crepes, and 6 vanilla almond Florentines.
