We’re considering a trip up to the Bay Area, and thought we’d check out the Sam’s Grill website to see what’s changed lately. Looks fairly similar to what it was when we were last there in 2019, with at least one disturbing exception: Sourdough used to come with the meal, and as I understood it, Sam’s had their own variation on file with Boudin (as did numerous other old-school places). Now they’re charging $3 for it – I have no issue with that (we’ll let Brunch Person on the L.A. board worry about it --or would, if he hadn’t been kicked out).
My issue is this: It’s no longer Boudin sourdough, but according to the menu, comes from “Jane the Bakery”. Does anyone know what the story is there? Some frou-frou sourdough, or something actually better than Boudin, or what? I wasn’t so concerned when they took the gratin dishes off the menu, as most of the potential customers for those had probably already died of coronary artery disease, etc., but this sourdough thing is a departure from tradition, and tradition is what a place like Sam’s is all about. If anyone has been there recently, please let us know how the bread is, as we consider it an integral part of a Sam’s meal.
