We are so fucking back: Three Flames Mongolian is Punta Cabras

Went for Father’s Day today and it is everything I remember from the original Tacos Punta Cabras. Cauliflower tostada, shrimp tacos, fish tacos, the pineapple salsa, all that good stuff.

The kids liked the burgers and Mongolian bbq. But a must visit near LAX

First of all… it’s a nicer atmosphere than I expected. Genuinely comfortable place to spend time (I was waiting for my daughter’s plane to land, and I was pleased to have a decent place to hang out).

The menu is willfully bizarre; Tacos Puntas Cabras meets Mongolian BBQ with burgers and fries.

I got some classics and tried one new item. Interesting touches of improvement on the classic items:

Cod and scallops. Just the same as I remember. The tiny cups of pineapple habanero salsa haven’t changed a bit.

Mixto and cauliflower tostadas and albacore taco.

A lot of tiny changes have made the tostadas even better than they were. Cauliflower is now two (purple and white) varieties instead of just one. Both tostadas were heavily dressed in a more highly seasoned marinade than before. A Persian cucumber sunomo has replaced the original Persian cucumbers… and they were sprinkled generously with samphire, which added a briny touch.

Genuinely impressive.

The albacore was dressed like the tostadas rather than like the other tacos.

Every other patron (and every takeout order) was having the Mongolian BBQ. To my untrained eye, they looked fine. Nothing special.

Two minor off notes. They’re operating on a skeleton crew of two (at least on Wednesday afternoon) and the two of them were struggling to keep up with the pace. And I tried to order a seafood burger, and they happily took my order, but then realized they no longer have any seafood patties and they had to refund the order. Not a problem.

is Josh there?

He wasn’t in the house, no.

Willfully took someone to LAX the other day just so I could stop there afterwards. Hit just as well the second time.

Just for clarification they are operating out of three flames Mongolian.

I was trying to google punta cabras and was coming up empty.

Sounds like Josh Gil is going through a lot. Will have to check the new place out!

A three-Michelin-star rating signifies exceptional cuisine and a dining experience worth a special journey
Considering the challenge of travel to LAX indeed this seems 3+ stars.

Briefly off-topic: ohmigod, this is no joke. Picked up partner from LAX a few mos ago w/o knowing how insane things have gotten there. After finally getting home, I was like, “Okay, seriously, I’m not doing that again, and you’re gonna have to take a shuttle to a nearby hotel or parking lot.”

On-topic: Looking forward to trying the ?pop-up b/c I never had cauliflower anything from TPC.

I am going to start making folks take the people mover to the metro station from the day it opens ad infinitum.

the scallop tostada was really nice and refreshing, had a lot of burstful flavor, and the toppings hold together nicely. then right after, the warm fried fish taco, which was also loaded up nicely, hit the spot. pineapple habanero on both for sure.

also a lax drop-off visit.

Sidebar: you guys are so nice with your LAX dropoffs that place scares me for pick up and drop off such a nightmare now with only the outer lane for cars.

always pick people up upstairs at departures, so much easier. Also, FYI traffic at LAX is getting better, not worse. way fewer tourists arriving/leaving.

That’s a good tip although I rarely pick ppl up now. I just tell them to take Ubers.

This the tip my father told me like 20 yrs ago.

On-topic: I’m hoping to try Three Flames over the long weekend…

Actually depends on time of day. Some times it’s better to drop off at arrivals (morning) but PM pick up at departures is a good hack. Hopefully (but not likely) the people mover will ease some of the congestion as I go in and out at least monthly for myself and most months for friends/family. At least there won’t be any more car rental buses.

Chef Josh Gil has continued his costly fight with cancer.

His Go Fund Me to assist with medical transporation costs to bring him back home to Los Angeles.

A food fundraiser, cohosted by LA Taco’s Javier Cabral and Chef Jonathan Perez at Districto Catorce on Sept 2 in Boyle Heights. Flyer linked, and here’s the language - note Vezbi Foundation is also an organizer with this event, so a portion of the ticket purchase will be tax deductible.

Join us at Distrito Catorce for a night of community, culture, and solidarity as we come together to support Chef Josh Gil in his fight against cancer.

This special fundraiser is co-hosted by Javier Cabral, Editor-in-Chief of L.A. TACO, along with Chef Jonathan Perez, who will prepare modern tacos inspired by the flavors of Baja and the Valle de Guadalupe wine region, where Josh cooked for many years of his life. Complementing the food, will be a wine tasting with select Baja wines curated by Gil & Eloisa of Vinos Los Angeles.

Your $75 ticket includes: Three handcrafted tacos by Chef Jonathan Perez and a curated Baja wine tasting experience

Every contribution makes a difference. Proceeds will go directly to support Chef Josh Gil and his family during this critical time.

This event is made possible through the Vezbi Foundation (501c3 nonprofit), ensuring that all donations are tax-deductible.

Come eat, sip, and stand with Josh. Together, we can show him the same generosity and passion that he has given our city through food and culture.

*Walk-ins are welcome, but availability cannot be guaranteed as seating, food, and wine are limited, and this event is expected to sell out.

If I’m reading the website correctly, it seems like one can make a donation that is also still tax deductible w/o purchasing a ticket (for those of us who cannot make it).

I finally got there! The original location was one of my favored work lunch spots many years ago. Like I couldn’t get there every day, but when I wanted to feel like I had free agency over my movements I would take a 75 minute lunch hour and just THRILL to the salsa and the cauliflower torta.

I’m happy to report the salsas and torta are exactly as I remember them. Chef Gill was not in the house, however one of the employees told me he had just been in a week or two ago, and things were going as well as they can.

We had the chips and salsa which were notably delicious; two cauliflower tortas with no flaws detected. The cod taco, the pork belly taco and the fried chicken taco. Superb aqua frescas as well.

I find myself in the area on a regular basis and want to go back ASAP, and try the steak taco. The pork belly didn’t do it for me. Dining companion and I agreed the fried chicken taco was the slam dunk winner of tacos. No photo taken.
