Question: how do FM’s have strawberries right now? I saw several vendors w/ strawberries this weekend, and I actually got a small amt from Rosewood (gaviotas). While nowhere near peak, they were actually surprisingly fine (given the time of year).
I just got a giant palette fresh picked from the field 3 feet away from me in Oxnard. They were in glorious shape… HUGE. HOWEVER, the flavor was not great.
Yeah I have no idea I have resorted to buying supermarket ones recently. The ones that I tried at the farmers markets were more expensive and no better than the store boughts.
If you find any other places thare selling good ones please list them
California has great weather! It’s most of the answer. Then you can do the hoop house thing
Will do. I generally completely avoid buying strawberries at supermarkets out of season, but, if they look tempting and aren’t obscenely expensive, maybe I’ll give them a try….
Has anybody seen JJ’s Lone Daughter anywhere recently? Been a while since I have seen them at SM, but maybe they just don’t have any avocados right now and the citrus isn’t ready yet?
She’ll be back soon.
California strawberries can be part of the family table all year long. In winter, the shipments come from southern California, mainly from Oxnard, Orange County, and San Diego. As the weather warms up, production moves north, and farms in Watsonville and Santa Maria begin harvesting and shipping.
Fall SMFM
Cuyama orchard Caville blanc d’Hiver apples
Garlic and the best smoked jalapeños I’ve ever had (regretted not buying more, it’s not like they will go bad from windrose farms
Haricot noir from 2 peas in a pod (dried)
Marmande tomatoes
Quince! Again not sure what yet but they’ll end up on the Thanksgiving table in some form
Nice! I’m considering the quince tart Tatin from David Lebovitz‘s website but haven’t decided yet
I am seeing strawberries EVERYWHERE. But it’s still rather early, no?
Traditional season was May, but the industry has extended it to year-round.
For sure! @robert is right try and hold off as long as possible!
Some varietals are late march early April depending on the weather. The Albion’s from Tamai right now are quite good
There are places in SoCal where it gets warm so early that they might have good strawberries by now, though from most places I find them inedible this early.
