Too bad Murray doesn’t come to Torrance
I want more cherries!
Just based on samples (although I did purchase some today, too)…
The Flavorosa pluots at Arnett seem pretty good.
G Farms white and yellow peaches were tasty. I had a yellow cherry, which seemed a bit flavorless (get some red ones instead, which I hadn’t sampled). Person working at G Farms said we are in the middle of cherry season.
Strawberries (I’m blanking on the vendor name but it’s the one just north of Gaytan at the Brentwood FM) were quite sweet (not Harry’s Berries level, but close enough for my purposes). Varietal wasn’t listed.
(Addendum: I think the strawberries were from Ayala Farms!)
Maras available at Harry’s and quite good. There are a few melons at Weiser but I didn’t get any.
Grabbed a couple melons today. Will let you know when I crack them open.
Also, I talked to a few farmers today and the season is 2-3 weeks ahead of schedule due to warming, which means I’ll get my hands on my favorite peaches even sooner.
I picked up a ripe Arava today from Weiser and it was great
Damn you Weiser for not coming to Torrance any more!
This probably is not very convenient for you, but Weiser has a farm stand at Row DTLA on Thursdays and Saturdays: Weiser Family Farms
Appreciate it yeah I bought from them last year while we were at the row!
Yellow peaches (not sure of specific varietal) from Regier’s this wk seemed pretty peak, IMHO.
White peaches not quite there yet (although I always thought white peaches were in season earlier than are yellow ones?).
If peach season is peaking in the third week of May, who knows anything?
There were two kinds on Wednesday. I went with fiesta gem (recommended by staff) and it was really good.
Great white peaches at burkdoll super sweet. I think they may be nearing peak.
Grabbed the last rainiers of the year at Murray and they were very good!
White nectarines from K&K Ranch have been excellent this week.
Wong Mangos and Andy’s Orchard in the house today at SMFM.
Ran into Jordan picking tomatoes at Munak after the pod dropped this morning @MaxShapiro
The peaches (both white and yellow) at Regier today were GINORMOUS. Not sure why.
One of the staff at Harry’s Berries said that the gaviotas and mara des bois were the sweetest, w/ the gaviotas being juicier. Can a strawberry be too juicy for its own good? I feel like all the juice is kind of diluting the flavor.
[Edit: should’ve mentioned that I selected the gaviotas b/c I thought, “Who doesn’t want a juicy strawberry???”]
Seascape were always my favorite variety. Not as sweet as the gaviota but with more acidity. Harry’s used to grow about 50% each but Gaviota has really won out and is there main variety now
See Canyon has a ton of really nice Apricots, not the prettiest but great flavor. Picked up some peaches from Terry Ranch that are really tasty
I’ve preferred the Seascapes thus far this year, but went with Gaviota and Mara’s this week. The latter were bigger than I’ve ever seen them so wanted to grab those for sure.
Probably not true, but I always feel that the bigger strawberries are filled with that central Valley aquifer water! But I think in reality that bigger berries are from younger plants and smaller berries are from older plants. Personally, I always find the smaller berries more flavorful.
Mara des Bois are normally smaller than any other commercial variety and have a unique flavor similar to wild strawberries.
