Where can I find Aleppo pepper?

Thx!

I found this at Surfas a couple years back. I think I checked Epicurus and didn’t find it there at the time but that may have changed

Monsieur Marcel at the original farmers market has a huge selection spices oils and vinegars of good quality. It’s worth checking there

Bristol Farms, Vicente Foods, Abertsons, Vons.

Think of the stores around you that carry Morton & Basset or Frontier Co-op spices.

I like the one from Penzeys. They are in Torrance.

What does it taste like? is it spicy? I’m assuming not because the recipe calls for a lot.

It’s complex, fruity, sort of fermented-tasting, unique. What I’ve had is not super-hot. Some sources say 10,000 Scoville umits but I’d say more like 2,500.

I don’t think there is currently any actual Aleppo pepper from Aleppo. There are Aleppo-style peppers from Turkey and elsewhere.

If you’re close to Silver Lake, Oaktown Spiceshop has it as well as a really nice selection of spices in general: https://oaktownspiceshop.com/

I’ve been happy with the quality and freshness of everything I’ve picked up from them so far.

LA grocery and cafe carries the burlap and barrel one (aka silk chili)

I love Oaktown’s Umami Salt. It’s worth the visit alone. I‘be given away so many as gifts.

Excellent quality! I’ve ordered from there online. For some reason I thought they were based in the bay area

They originated in Oakland but are slowly starting to expand

I feel silly ordering online when they have a local shop but that’s on me! Pretty impressed with what I’ve tried so far

What @robert said is spot on, I haven’t found the Aleppo style pepper spicy at all but very flavorful. I couldn’t read far enough into the LA Times article for their suggested substitutes but I’ve found it somewhat close to urfa bieber which I found at some market in the Tehrangeles area

They just opened the Silver Lake store earlier this year– it’s in the same plaza as Rockaway Records (in their previous spot).

Swung by Surfas this morning and checked for Aleppo pepper. Sorry for the blurry photo but it’s in stock:

Any good spice shops in North Central OC? Penzeys and Savory Spice at Soco both closed.

Williams Sonoma carries Aleppo pepper, too.
