4-6 Jack in the Box tacos with a couple of fries squished inside with extra hot sauce…
In n Out double double with extra cheese, grilled onions, no tomt’s, extra spread and a side of spread and an extra large Iced Tea with lots of lemons and ice…
If you like Hatchet Hall so much you should really hit up Bestia. I think they hit similar palates
I have eaten at Bestia a ton… I just haven’t posted because I am there so often and it’s already so busy they don’t need the reports… Hatchet Hall on the other hand may be the most underrated restaurant in LA at the moment.
My go-to comfort spots have tended to change over the years. Right now, one of our go-to’s is DTF in South Coast Plaza. We almost always sit at the bar. When Laurence (sp?) is working, he will bring us drinks while we wait for our seats, and the conversation is always great. And who wouldn’t be comforted by dumplings, soup, and noodles?
Vito - love love love their pasta and that Caesar (Enrique’s is the best, he uses a dash of Cholula). I’m particularly fond of the Ortolana Pasta (chicken, asparagus, spinach, broccoli, chopped garlic/oil sauce) when I need comforting.
Tacos Por Favor or Taqueria Chihuahua - love the tacos at both.
The Talpa for the ground beef tacos and their insanely good guacamole
Ivy at the Shore was exactly right tonight when I was tired and had laryngitis, had been indoors all day and needed comfort food and an ocean breeze. The food and service were absolutely stellar. Welcomed, as always, with a complimentary glass of champagne. My cocktail was perfectly prepared. Mesquite grilled wild salmon for me and my sweetheart had a NY steak (something he doesn’t get at home). Went to hell and ordered a hot fudge sundae for dessert. I don’t think there is a better HFS anywhere. Went home with 2 boxes of their yummy chocolate chip cookies. This was seriously good comfort food. There is a reason that the Ivys have been around so long. Consistently good food, big portions and never succumbed to the latest fads. Good luck finding a “small plate” on the menu. Ricky and Lynn know how to run their restaurants. They are not looking for star chefs, are not writing cookbooks nor are they putting out endless press releases. They obviously have a loyal clientele. Moreover, many of their servers and hosts have been there for years.
Went two days before you @maudies5, about 2 in the afternoon. Ordered my usual ham and cheese omelet, hold the ham double the cheese. Split a small (ha ha) lobster pizza with my wife. A couple of minutes after the order, the server came back over and said, “I don’t mean to be presumptuous, but I noticed you didn’t want ham on the omelet. I wanted to warn you, in case it matters, that there is ham on the lobster pizza.” It didn’t matter, I just like a really cheesy omelet, but his question was a model of courtesy and good service. As a sidebar, the ‘ham’ on the pizza was prosciutto, but I figure he didn’t want to confuse me in case I didn’t know what prosciutto was.
I went to Apple Pan the first time ever this past weekend and can fur sure see this fitting the comfort bill perfectly. What a place.
This thread is quite old now, but I think about it a lot. I still feel new to LA, and there’s so many new places to try that I don’t quite have regular spots. Say, that I’ve been to 10+ times. More so, places that feel like they could be this kind of a place. These are places that I know will make me happier:
Apple Pan
Pann’s
Kagura
Leo’s
Guisados
Mayura
Langer’s
Luv2Eat
In-N-Out
