Chowspouse wants to try the Octomore 14’s, including 14.3 (122 proof, 200+ ppm phenol, I.e., hotter and smokier than a tire fire). Any bar in town have these?
Have you tried The Daily Pint in Santa Monica? They used to have a good selection of Octomore in the past, but I haven’t been in a few years.
Cypress Craft Beer & Liquor has Octomore 15.1 ($200) 15.2 ($245) and 15.3 ($300) if you are interested.
I was hoping to comparison sample them, before dropping $500 or so for bottles which I might never finish, and might not be able to taste any difference between. (I recently saw a whisky critic opine that above a certain peat phenol level, the taste is Indistinguishable, and the number becomes simply a matter of macho bragging rights.)
I had the opportunity to sample Octomore at a Whiskey X/Bruichladdich event a few years back and I can tell you that the overt uber-peatiness was not indistinguishable. Still have a little left at home. I’ll try again when I’m back in town and see if my memory is incorrect.
