You’re welcome. Guppy House was good for shaved ice and they had a great dark chocolate & condensed milk brick toast. I was definitely down for the latter, and I’ve yet to find an exact replacement. Snack items were decent, if not spectacular.
LOL Taiwanese Doc Brown. Yeah, Uncle Yu sold the place, which AFAIK, has continued on in the same vein. Some good memories of late night stinky tofu and snacks there. Mrs. Yu and the head waitress remembered the white guy that liked stinky tofu and would get an order going before I was even seated And there was often conversation with waitresses about my love of stinky tofu and/or Taiwanese snacks I don’t know what happened with The Jurassic. I was kind of surprised about its closure. Both those places were kind of more adult versions of Guppy House, with free flowing beer, but had some good items. Plus, they were open late when a lot of places weren’t, especially for the ESGV with The Jurassic.
Made an inquiry about the kaya got me to try the kaya toast. I ordered the pandan kaya and were nice enough to give the plain kaya as well. Delicious jam. Would have liked the toast a little more warm/toasted but maybe that’s how it is in Singapore. Both kayas are pretty good. No soft boiled egg and coffee here though. More like a drink/dessert shop than a kopitiam.
We did king crab 3 ways - Typhoon style for the body, steamed for the legs, steamed egg on the body
Squab
Black pepper filet mignon
crispy roast pork
garlic stir fried black cod (I love this dish, but others might find it a bit earthy)
Pea sprouts
Haven’t had stinky tofu in awhile might have to hit up Tofu King in Rowland in the coming weeks.
Reading the Yelp reviews for Indian sounds like Uncle Yu/Taiwanese Doc Brown moved back to Taiwan and the food is not the same with changed owners. Sadly there is no more Taiwanese beer house in SGV.
Orange Bistro has like 6 different stinky tofu offerings including a hot pot of duck blood, chitlins, and stinky tofu. That sounds freakin amazing. Is this the spot now for stinky tofu? Or is there better. I like Tofu King in Rowland a lot.
Orange Bistro has an incredible looking menu. I’ll probably get 3 cup chicken because I would like to make it at home (see my recent home cooking posts) and would need a good reference. I’ll try Clarissa Wei’s and WoksOfLife recipes too.
Also they got a few sponge gourd/si gua dishes.
What other Taiwanese dishes should I try besides the basics like 3 cup chicken, Hakka stir fry, flies head, sacha beef and water spinach, cabbage with dry shrimp, a-cai, yam leaves, yam porridge, seems like I eat these all the time.
Orange BIstro is kinda hit or miss for me. Some stuff is crazy oily which is kinda surprising for a taiwanese place.
The Spicy stinky tofu hot pot (with duck blood/pig intestines) is really good. Shrimp roll is tasty too. If you’re gonna do a si gua I really like the dry shrimp one (kinda of in a broth).
What’s the Chinese name for Longo? A friend in SGV was wondering (since he’s interested in going and doesn’t recognize the Western name of the restaurant).
Yeah, Tofu King still rules. It’s some time ago now, but I followed the advice of a Taiwanese friend who alternated between Tofu King and Lee’s Garden, depending which side of the SGV he was in (Tofu King has had an Arcadia location for around a decade now). I also used to get it at Old Country Cafe because it was open late and a great place to relax with some stinky tofu and a red bean milk.
Orange Bistro is run by Monica, who was behind the fairly acclaimed BeBe Fusion, and a fairly short-lived place in the old Ye Loy in Temple City, the name of which escapes me now. Main Street is far and away the best location she’s had, as BeBe was in some bizarre spaces/locations.
Their stinky tofu was quite strong. BeBe briefly had an item that was split stinky tofu with a slice of sausage in each piece I have got to get to Orange Bistro.
