Maybe it’s just the hearth/open fire in both Stissing House and Dunsmoor. But there’s a directness/simplicity to the cooking at both, and a gesture towards earlier versions of American food.

In terms of her personal symbolism or whatever, definitely that plus the upstate pastoral fantasies of Millenial Brooklyn.

The coconut cake is also great at Stissing if you ever end up there.

I like Stissing House! It feels like it’s in the mix between Dunsmoor, King, St. John. Somewhere between old american and UK dining with a focus on simplicity and cozy hearth cooking.

lol I’m not connected enough to the Brooklyn scene to know the upstate fantasies.

But now that you mention, my crown heights pals go upstate an ungodly amount!

Reservations not available.

It’s been on my list since she was announced as part of the Top Chef cheftestants. Should have moved on it sooner.

Sucks. Idea of this restaurant outstripped the experience for me but was rooting for them. Multifactorial, the closing, but they never figured out how to make the space fun.

yeah, agreed, one of those places that embodies LA so well, but it never quite did it for me. Weird, terrible space. Those arts district locations are tough right now.

feel like “embodies LA so well” + “didn’t do it for me” + “weird terrible space” really says it all about the state of dining out in this city

I hope they get a new space soon and keep it as a restaurant not a deli.

Interesting timing on the Food & Wine article.

Really interesting spot…always felt like it was so smart but also didnt hit quite right. Also just a bizarre space that I think it kept trying to round peg itself into. Feel like the buzzwords did a lot of heavy lifting but also burdened it in a weird way.

I feel like they just never figured out the right format for the space, or found the audience they wanted, and I had three or four meals over the years that felt like they all came from totally different restaurants. That said, the Thursday night tasting menu that they briefly did was one of my best meals last year and I hope they come back with a little more focus (high end or approachable or whatever they want, just more committed to it) and also hopefully east of Hollywood.
