August 2023 Rundown

Caught some Surf & Sun yesterday before the storm. It was a little overcast but beautiful and hard to believe a big storm was coming our way. :cyclone:

My cousin made Caprese Sandwiches & Pasta Salad. I brought Ciabatta Sandwiches and Ham & Brie Ficelles from Joan’s on 3rd (beverly-grove) which my cousins called bougie before wolfing them down.

It was a really fun day! :ocean: :sun_with_face: :beach_umbrella:

They are bougie but it doesn’t make them any less tasty!

Word! Their ficelle is one of my favorite sandwiches.

I haven’t been to Joan’s in a long time but I’ll keep that in mind next time I go!

They have them near the middle cashier already packaged. Hadn’t been in a while either. It’s a bit of a madhouse and parking is challenging but whenever I get inside I get happy. I love roaming. Everything is displayed to tempt.

Parking there is such a nightmare I think I would have to get myself a Chinese chicken salad just for old times sake!

I always have luck parking just a few blocks ahead. Towards Fairfax. It was also my excuse for walking past Dingle Berries when it was there. ~Le SIGH!~

Great visit to LA to help my daughter move in for her soph year at USC! Places I hit were

Bonaparte Bistro, Hermosa Beach: Food was very good (see pic of tuna tartare) but the coffee was godawful - I mean really bad. Both my hot coffee and DD’s iced. Get on that, BB!
Pizzeria Sei: Absurdly good (see pics). Friendly folks too!
Johnny’s West Adams: good hearty food and fun vibe. My reuben was delightfully messy and DD enjoyed her first knish
Courage Bagels: Very impressed! (See pic of Burnt Everything Bagel and also bagels with Salmon and whitefish salad)
Goor Ghap Kimbob: I tried the Anchovy-Pepper Kimbob. Possibly the best Kimbob I have ever had. Very little rice (AKA filler). See pics

Sqirl: Yes it’s hipster central but the food is good (see pic of Rainbow Ricotta Toast)
Bastion Bakery in GCM: Great resource if you’re staying downtown. Tried the Croissant Bun, Kouign Amann, Peach Bomboloni, and Apricot Pistachio Danish. Delicious stuff (see pic of Buns)
Danae’s Diner: New eatery in the Delphi Hotel. Still working out some kinks and still pretty empty but the food was good
Fatto A Mano: Great little place just up the street from Redondo Pier. I got Fusilli with Pesto and Taglioini-Almond Cake (see pics)
Philippe’s: LA Bucket List item. Got the Lamb, double dipped. Very tasty (see pic).
Little Miss Cafe: Cute little cafe on Wilshire. Nice neighborhood spot with good breakfasty food (I got Overnight Oats, see pic)

What a lucky kiddo!

I wish you had moved me into the dorms many moons ago.

Just Monday-Friday. We just hate to waste even a single meal.

LOL yeah she is lucky but she’s a great kid so it’s all good. Plus her twin is right here at George Mason so that somewhat alleviates the cost. :grinning:

What a move in weekend it was!!! Glad you guys got some excellent eats and thanks so much for the report! I hadn’t heard of Goor Ghap Kimbob!! Will have to check it out! It looks awesome!

I’ve never seen one like that before. Personally I’d want more rice (which is the “bap” in “kimbap”).

It’s a fairly new place in a typical plaza in Koreatown. Not even sure how we found it but definitely a winner! Massive roll for I think $10.

It’s a casual offshoot by Chef Kang who has several different places in Koreatown, notably HanEuem which got a write up by Bladdison.

Did you get the passion fruit or something else?

On my way to OC so I stopped by the old neighborhood at Nilly’s. Filipino-American owned! I wonder what high school they went to.

Simple menu with burgers, fries, dogs, and shakes. Plus they have counter seating!

A little squeeze of some ketchup in that double cheese was perfect. Funny how my high school McD’s is right next to it.

Will definitely be back.

Also the chilli cheese fries look insanely good. Looks way better than Tam’s and the hood spots.
