Here is a fun nostalgic idea for you guys who grew up here. Go back to your childhood donut shop! Something so comforting in going back and picking the same donuts you loved as a kid. I will always love these shops.
I’ll take an old school donut shop maple bar over anything
I was never a big donut fan as a kid (did yeasted donuts exist 30 yrs ago???), but I LOVED Martinellis! ![]()
And long before that.
I really wish I could. I miss Stan’s donuts so much. I would pay a whole lot for a peanut butter pocket and a cinnamon stick. The Chicago ones aren’t the same.
I’m glad they’ve been making it work out of Cofax, such a good burger. Wonder what’ll happen to Yojimbo space now
Stan’s was such a special place. I am so glad I got to try that peanut butter pocket. Do you know any shops in So Cal that are doing the peanut butter pocket or something close to it?
I love maple bars! Chocolate bars, sprinkles, jelly filled, custard filled, buttermilk, cinnamon crumb, and apple fritters are also some of my favs.
A maple bar and a breakfast burrito is the ultimate So Cal breakfast imo
The Donut Man in Glendora has Peanut Butter & Jelly. GCM should have that too.
Similar but still tasty is Old Ferry Donuts at The Source in Buena Park.
They have a peanut butter donut more like a nutter butter than a Reese peanut butter cup, but it is delicious.
Have yet to find a copy of The Huell.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think Primo’s (which took over at the Stan’s Westwood location) carries on the tradition of The Huell…
Went to Thai town last weekend to buy some groceries at Silom Market and snacks at Bhan Khanom Thai.
Lunched beforehand at Hoy-Ka Thai Noodles a few blocks away.
When I saw “pork liver” in the Hoy ka Noodle menu description, gotta admit, my gut reaction was "GROSS
" but then I thought, well I love French and Vietnamese pates and yakitori style liver skewers so I should give it a try since it’s their signature item.
When the Hoy-Ka noodles in soup came to the table, the edges of the pork liver slices reminded me of obtuse triangles
. The sharp iron taste of the liver contrasted nicely with the sweet and sour flavors of the soup and the al dente texture of the fat rice noodles I chose. YMMV
Definitely will order again, but 2nd visit will be for the Boat Noodles, which I’ve never had before anywhere else. The last time I ate memorable noodles with liver was the former Sotto’s chicken liver pasta (if anyone knows of something similar, plmk).
As you can see, I also got Hoy-Ka’s papaya salad with crispy pork on top. Enjoyed this as well, eventhough both the papaya salad and the soup noodles were a little too sweet. Spice level: Medium (around the same as Jitlada’s Medium).
No pics for the snacks at Bhan Khanom Thai, but I ordered coconut jellies, mini pan-fried Banom Krok coconut cakes and steamed sticky rice with taro wrapped in pandan leaves. Standout for me was the sticky rice with taro.
Re liver and noodles, Superfine Playa has a pasta dish with chicken liver that I’ve enjoyed a couple of times before a movie at the Cinemark.
RIGATONI

Good eating today.
Jin Tea
Excellent tea. Excellent boba. Thanks for the heads up @Clayfu
Pearl River Deli
Decidedly not a menace.
@lapizzamaven considering you regularly post on a food forum I have a VERY hard time believing you’d find this disgusting if you actually tried it. Flavor wise it is undeniable and the texture of the skin is far less disgusting than I think you’re imagining.
And bad eating today
Avi Cue
$27 for two half pita sandwiches. The meat was…fine. The pita doesn’t hold a candle to iii Mas. Don’t waste your time going here.
Post-Bowl burrito at Brothers Cousins, al pastor con todos! Epic burrito. Really great caramelization on the al pastor. Also they ran out of rice so I got the potatoes from the cazo ala Ave 26.
Also I asked yes they are all brothers and cousins lol super nice and welcoming taqueros!
Bonus points is easy parking. Right across from Primo’s.
Now im almost embarrassed for posting my aversion to the Hainan Chicken(especially, to me, the off putting skin) but I just saw that PRD is offering “fried Hainan Chicken!” that looks great!

Too bad.
Loved the pop-up at Antico.
I happened to be at UCLA today I went by
Primo’s around 12pm and confirmed they have a peanut butter filled donut, but they were sold out.
